25 Nov - Post Epic Depression

I was feeling out of sorts all day yesterday and couldn't put my fingers on why. The reason finally occurred to me this morning. Last month, the twelfth book in the Wheel of Time series was released. It had been several years since the eleventh one for various reasons, so I decided to re-read them all. I started the first book again in September and finished the new one Monday night. That's a total of twelve book and 10,220 pages (with two books left to go, scheduled for the next two years). ...

Not really a lot to report here. We had a lot of things going on, but nothing really interesting.

Van and his buddies had a great time at Curious George. It wasn't as bad as I was afraid it would be, though it was hardly Les Miserables either.

I've already talked about the soccer games, but the end-of-season party went pretty well, even though there was a bit of friendly rivalry between the Knights and Mustangs.

We had a bit of excitement yesterday, but I'll mention it elsewhere.

While the kids on the school soccer teams (Daniel, Bobby, and Mickey) have already had games; today was the first day of the BYA (Bransom Youth Association) season. I make it clear to all the boys that, as much as I love them, there is no way I can attend every game everyone plays. Fortunately, there are enough older brothers that someone is there.

However, today WAS opening day, so I managed to coach my team, then swing by everyone else's game for at least a little bit, except for Van, ...

There's not been a lot going on this week, but it's the quiet before the storm. There are a lot of tests tomorrow and next week, and the older boys are spending a little extra time with the books.

The kids in public school get out at 2pm next Tuesday. The kids at BCA get out at normal time Tuesday, but none of them have class on Wednesday. Of course, with no school on Wed, it looks like I'm going to have a gathering Tuesday night and a whole herd on Wed. Equally of course, you know I'm ...

The first surprise was that Corey decided to come home for his birthday (which was actually last Sunday). He stayed at his mom's house, but he's been over here some. He went to several soccer games, then hung out with Barry yesterday afternoon. He (along with his mom, Russell, and Crystal) are coming over for lunch in about an hour. Pot roast, new potatoes, fresh green beans, corn, and I even made his favorite cake -- yellow with chocolate icing.

The other surprise wasn't on me. Tuesday ...

I actually got a pretty good nights sleep last night. It was actually just a little over six hours, but I didn't wake up once, which is pretty rare for me.

I was sitting here this morning, eating a little snack (I like to have something light, then I'll eat a more regular meal when the kids come down. This morning, I was just having a cup of broth and a piece of toast) and reading the paper when Charlie came down. It's cooled off some, so he'd slept in a thermal top, but was still just ...

My mom has the flu (not H1N1, but the seasonal stuff). Now, I'm know she's feeling horrible, but I have to admit, I think she did it on purpose. When she called to tell me she was sick, the first thing she pointed out was, I'd have to do the Thanksgiving menu this time. Change that --- I'm sure she got sick on purpose.

You see, Thanksgiving is the largest holiday for us. On Christmas, things end up occurring at different times, so all the family is rarely here at once. However, on Thanksgiving, ...

First of all, let me say that everything went fairly well last night while I wasn't home. It sounds like there were a couple of minor problems, but no one got spanked and the house didn't burn down.

Second, I've been informed that Tina and Kim have told me that I'm taking the cubbies to a Yo Gabba Gabba concert the weekend after Thanksgiving. It turns out that I'm accompanying them, but they need a man along to help control things. I'm not quite sure how that was arranged without me knowing ...

So, I've promised to work the debate tournament at the high school this afternoon. That should be enough for one day, right? I mean, I have to be there about 2:30 to help set up the catering equipment that the school's borrowing from the Party Palace and teach the volunteers how to use it. Then I'll be judging from about 4pm until they finish, which will probably be 10:30 or so.

With that to look forward to, I had to see my lawyer and business manager today. Do you know what drives ...

Of course, everyone is made at me, because I took almost all our extra stuff to the store to be given to whoever showed up for today's Magic tourney.

First of all, I should say that the end of Daylight Savings Time seems to have been a Godsend. Getting the kids up and off to school this morning was SO easy. (Last week, it was still dark when they were leaving. This week, you could see dawn when they were getting up.) As for myself, I've felt one thousand percent better the last couple of days.
Actually, the party went really well last night, all things considered. Next year will be a lot better, since there should be a very clear break for three parties. This year, having two parties got the younger guys party a little crowded. Still, we did okay, with Van's Posse, the Cubbies, and a few other kids in his bedroom and the playroom (with snacks in the dining room). The older kids mostly stayed downstairs in the gameroom, and Bryce and the twins had the backyard and the living room.

No, this isn't a pre-Christmas post. I was just thinking about all the things I have to do this week.

While I normally don't let the kids have a big sleepover on a weekend like this one (there's already enough things for me to try to track, thank you kindly for asking), Topher's parents had made plans to be out of town. While they hate to 'impose' on me (their word), I'm going to keep the squirt, so he can be at the party. The main problem now is, even though he's in the same grade as ...

Nothing special to say here today, but I thought I'd let you know what was happening around Bransom.

I thought I was going to take the younger kids to the Fort Worth Zoo last night, for their Halloween celebration and my friend Paul (the guy with whom Ryan stayed for summer camp back in June) was going to meet us with his family. When I went online to check ticket prices, I saw that it was from 5:30 to 8pm, not 3:30, like Paul had said. Considering how far Fort Worth is, we decided it ...

I might have mentioned that we put up most of our Halloween decorations last Friday. Because of what weather can be like around here, we didn't put up everything. Some of the stuff that will go up outside for the parties would already be ruined if we'd hung it last week (a ton of rain yesterday and this morning). Still, while the fog machines and anything cardboard or paper isn't up, we have most of it done.

First, I've been asked why I'm not blogging a bit more often. It wasn't really a complaint, but I wanted to address that just a bit.

There are three main issues that go into all my writing, including the blogs, and even chatting. 1) I have something to write/chat/blog about. 2) I have the time to do one of those things. 3) I feel like doing them.

While there is always something going on in the house, a lot of times it's exactly the same thing as happened yesterday/last week/month/year. ...

We almost always go during the week, so I'd forgotten how bad Saturday crowds can be. Still, we had a good time.

Most of the kids aren't back yet, but the cubbies (van and some of his posse) were worn out, so we came home early. I practically had to bathe some of them, because they were falling asleep in the tub. They're all in bed and sawing logs now.

I managed to see a good show, hit all four haunted houses, and take a few rides. ...

Of course, in this family, that's not just oatmeal. I have to have oatmeal, Malt-o-meal, Cream of Wheat, and Instant Grits (mainly for Noah, don't forget he was raised Cajun). Oatmeal's still the most popular, but once the weather starts cooling off, I have to make sure to always have raisins, honey, brown sugar, cinnamon, blueberries, strawberries, apple chunks, ...

Just a few quick updates on various things.

First, Shane called last night. He and Blake are doing pretty well with Grandpa. His only complaint is that Grandpa isn't much of a cook. I've invited them for Sunday Dinner, if they'd like to go to church with us.

It started raining last night and rained HARD early this morning, and kept it up most of the morning. It looks like no soccer games tomorrow, because the fields are too soaked (that's not definite, though), but the school carnival ...

I think I promised to mention college plans this time, but a few things have been happening today.

I guess the first thing I should mention is that Blake and Shane's grandfather got care of them yesterday, but they still spent the night here last night. He had to arrange access to their house, which took a bit more time than he expected, but he's there now, and he's going to pick the boys up from school. I don't know what's going on after that, but Shane and Blake seem to get along well ...

I received a call last night, not long after I'd gone to bed, from CPS. As a result, we have two new gentlemen staying with us. Shane and Blake are 9 and 5 years old. Shane is pretty small for his age, with light brown hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. I've just gotten off the phone with the pediatrician (fortunately, his parents use Dr. Dursley), and learned that the boy was delivered prematurely and had a lung infection when he was very young. He know has asthma and bad allergies, so I'm ...

Next Monday is Chris's 24th bday. I'm not sure exactly what we'll do, but I'll take him out for a nice, quiet, adult dinner with just the two of us (or maybe I'll invite Zack). Of course, he'll also have to come over here the weekend before and accept being tormented by the younger ones. I already picked up the new phone he's been wanting (don't ask- I always get all those numbers and stuff confused, but it's the newest I-phone) and paid two months for it. I've not wrapped it yet, but I picked ...

Anyway, it's mid-afternoon as i start writing this. It's 93F and a clear, sunny day. All the guys and some of their friends are out back, and everyone is determinedly ignoring that they have to go back to school tomorrow.

Not a lot to say. I already dealt with Noah's birthday and the soccer games elsewhere. I will update a couple of things that I mentioned in chat yesterday, and a quick story.

First, Barry wasn't here for Noah's party last night. I think there were two reasons for it. First, while they're good friends, they live together. I honestly think that Barry wanted to give Noah some time alone with his friends. The other thing is, Barry sometimes feels guilty about living with me. He loves ...

I should start by mentioning that, while Noah's game Tuesday night was away, he did win and brought his total up to four. Mickey went with him and was happy to tell me (allowing Noah to play modest) about both of them. Both of them were apparently off receptions. One was just a short pass when they were near the endzone; but, on the other one, he broke free of a tackle and ran 42 yards. His coach is pretty darned happy with him.

Since I had to go in for a while Tuesday, and have been ...

The trouble with doing these blogs now is, with the kids in school and soccer practice (or football) there's not a lot going on about which to blog.

I had to go in to work early this morning, pretty much the same time as the kids left. As the owner of the company, I'm required to make sure my employees receive safety training, and I had someone come out and demo some safety videos, along with support materials.
Honestly not much to comment on today. I spent most of the morning shopping. The rain we had all weekend has cooled things off a bit. We're supposed to get highs back up in the 80s later this week, but it's been in the 70s the last few days, which is real fall weather around here. That made me decide to start stocking for the winter (not like we ever get snowed in, but it's the concept).

Because of the size of my family, stocking up here has a slightly different connotation than for ...

About half my employees are college students who work part-time through the year (and are replaced during the summer by high school kids), so you can imagine they put quite a bit away.

I should mention that this might be my final post. I took Trent to get a few small things for his new bedroom and ended up buying an entire new bedroom set. So, if I don't post again, it was Rose. She killed me.

Magicats donated a fair amount of money, as well as having some book covers printed up, and donating machines to provide snacks for the kids. Because of that, I was asked to make a small speech at the beginning, and then was expected to shake hands, say hello, and help give out supplies. I wouldn't have minded that, except that things have been pretty crazy around the house, and it started at 8am. ...

21 August - What A Day

We had a pretty bad thunderstorm this morning. A lot of us were already up, so it must have hit about 5:45 or 6am. It didn't linger too long, though the radio said it hit Dallas a lot harder. From what I could see from the kitchen window, I think the worst of it might have passed us on the north. We then had a couple of light or quick showers and another heavy shower, but no thunder that time. We did NOT get to do the carnival stuff I had planned for the kids, and the ground's still too ...

19 August - Good Morning All

I'm up a bit early, but managed to get my first real good night's sleep in a few days, so I'm feeling pretty good. I'm taking Van and Mickey to the Dallas Zoo this morning, and we'll probably eat lunch there, so it should be a nice day, and I hope to get home before the heat gets TOO bad.

Ryan had several friends over last night. They didn't have their full role-playing group over, so they played Mageknight for a while and stayed up a little late, so I'm making breakfast by myself so he ...

18 August - Another in What Looks Like a Crazy Week

I think Van's tired of sharing me with friends. This morning, after Ryan and I had hashed out (along with an occasional brief argument) the menu for the next week, Van asked if he could go to the store with me. I told him, "I'm not taking a crowd with me today, Van." His reply, accompanied with a confused look, was, "I'm not a crowd, Dad." I looked around for a moment. All his friends who were over were, at least technically, being (definitely not-baby) sat, so I had ...

Got that out of the way. It's amazing how fast these things actually go, when you're the first one(s) in the office. It's great, because the Doc even files the insurance paperwork for us. When I take the whole horde, I always send flowers to the staff. It was a little embarrassing this time, because one of his assistants had quit and she was replaced by a guy. He laughed about it though, and said he'll pass them on to his girlfriend.

The boys were really well behaved. Of course, most ...

15 August - An Extremely Lazy Saturday

I'm not 100% positive, but I don't think I've actually accomplished anything today. That makes it pretty successful in some ways.

I guess I slept wrong last night or something, but I woke up with a sore shoulder and a big mouse on my neck. I've been dousing it in Icy Hot and letting the sun work on it while I lazed by the pool. I have gone in a couple of times, but have tried to avoid the usual wrestling and tossing that's involved in that around here. The Marchant and Malone boys are ...

14 August - Nothing Special

I've been a bit worn out the last couple of days. Probably several reasons for that. We had a (very minor) cool front come in today, so my sinuses have probably been a little inflamed. A lot of it is that the last couple of weeks before school are pretty hectic, and I've been running to keep up for a while now.

I didn't really have any special plans this morning, but about 8:30, I grabbed Van, had him change clothes, and we drove into Grapevine (just north of D/FW Airport, basically). ...
