The reason finally occurred to me this morning. Last month, the twelfth book in the Wheel of Time series was released. It had been several years since the eleventh one for various reasons, so I decided to re-read them all. I started the first book again in September and finished the new one Monday night. That's a total of twelve book and 10,220 pages (with two books left to go, scheduled for the next two years). ... About half my employees are college students who work part-time through the year (and are replaced during the summer by high school kids), so you can imagine they put quite a bit away.
