1 A Note About Magic: the Gathering on Tue Sep 01, 2009 10:33 am

Kat pointed out that a few things I said about Magic in my latest story (Bill and Duncan http://www.bransomtx.com/billduncan.html) didn't make much sense to him, though he could figure it out from the context. Therefore, I thought I'd give a (very) brief explanation, so you can at least have a hazy understanding of what I mean.

Magic is played with special cards. They print new sets of cards 3 or 4 times a year. Some of the cards have been in print since the game began. Others are retired. Some of those retired cards are VERY expensive these days.

Each player prepares his own deck. There are different types of cards, which have different rules on how and when you can play them. There are also different cards within each type, which have different effects. Each card has some basic information on all of them, while there are also places that each cards has its on specific information and instructions. (The cards also include art, so a lot of them are really nice to look at, as well).

The game is meant to be played by two players who each start at 20 life points, but can be played with different starting life totals and by different numbers of players. The main way to win the game is by using various types of cards to reduce your opponent to zero life.

That's the quick and dirty explanation. If you want to know more, either PM me or you can find a good article on how to play on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering_rules).

Hope this helps a bit.

Jack

Shocked Aaaaarrrgh! MTG! I thought I could escape it here! Mad

Mind you, I used to play it and had friends who played it a lot! One of them marshalled at a few tourneys. Although the game can be fun, it doesn't beat role-playing games IMO. Razz

The reason I think Magic: the Gathering is so popular (and in many ways is superior to an RPG) is that Magic can be played in one sitting. My kids take decks to debate tournaments, so when they have a down hour, waiting for breaks to be posted, they can whip it out. With an RPG, you have to have the same people there (or at least most of them) and it's usually a long-term commitment.

While I do enjoy a good, deeply involved, RPG, Magic and the other CCGs (collectible-card games) have the convenience factor on their side.

It's true that MTG and other CCGs are convenient and can be played in a single sitting but one big difference between them and RPGs is that they are competitive games while RPGs are collaborative ones. The players of an RPG work together to defeat a common enemy described and 'played' by a referee. I found RPG sessions to be more sociable and enjoyable for these reasons. However, it was stunning how CCGs nearly knocked out RPGs. Many kids growing up in the computer game/Internet era simply had no engagement with the rules- and text-heavy RPGs - a sign of the times I think - although RPGs have been making a comeback happily. Smile

By the way, why is everyone else in this thread older than me? Razz

Don't razz me, pedant! I used the double comparison consciously, for the effect. I'm well aware that it isn't standard, but I'm not bound by petty rules when expressing myself. Now what makes you think that you'd help yourself by putting padding down your pants? You won't be keeping them on during your spanking!

Darth you are famous and very well liked by everyone here but I must warn you before you tangle with Kat. There is a Mob that will jump you if you mess with El Gato!

Evil or Very Mad

Kat's travel in packs! Smile

Shocked Famous? Actually, that's kind of worrying! Razz But it's nice to know I'm well liked even if I'm a bit cheeky sometimes! Smile
