I think this is one of those stories that few people would quarrel doesn't deserve its shield. There is nothing 'original' in the story, which is a very straightforward plot, but the quality of the telling demonstrates why so many of us never tire of a tale of loving domestic discipline.

The father is more authoritarian than I'd like. I wish he didn't add extra punishment for 'attitude'. I also wish in his confrontation about using the jet ski, he hadn't set the kid up for a lie, which he later punishes. These are personal objections, though, which in no way diminish the story.

I liked the story a lot. I thought it was realistic. Life isn't always fair, and parents will behave exactly as the one in this story did time and again. Most aren't perfect. I don't think he was all that harsh or anything, and the kid probably had those extra swats for attitude comin' to him.

One thing I particularly liked about this story was how the dad just stood there and waited after the kid bent over and said he was ready. How unnerving would that be? A lot, I'd think!

You may be right, ivor. I think sometimes I like them a little meaner than they necessarily had to be. Very Happy

I'm sure that parents being assholes does reflect reality. I prefer a more idealized and romanticized depiction. Authoritarian people in both fiction and real life arouse something in me that is probably better left dormant.

While I admire this story very much, I will go so far as to say that while the parent's actions might be realistic, the kid's response to them is not. From what I've seen of kids in that age range, breaking down attitude is not that easy and it comes at a terrible price.
