Another new episode is out, in which Dominic Clarke makes an appearance. As part of a group of boys whom the chaplain has caught using coarse language and speaking crudely about an under-matron, Dominic reports to Andy to ask for a caning. Jamie wisely though reluctantly reports to Adkins Major.
I like the exchanges between Dominic and Andy in this chapter, which are playful and friendly, while at the same time, both are aware that friendship does not change Andy's disciplinary role. The chaplain (who, I think, has appeared before) strikes me as a pill. I see no real difference between applying the cane one's self and sending boys off to a third party to be caned... except that sending them to someone else adds to the difficulty of their situation, while allowing the chaplain to distance himself from the distasteful business with a Pontius Pilate-like hypocrisy.
Dominic's confession forces Jamie to do likewise
