I see this as an excellent idea. ...

If he loves the class and the dancing as much as I suspect, a short loss of the privilege should be enough to rattle his cage and make him aware that the school (and his parents) are serious about the issue. ...

I agree with Emlyn and Dave.  I think losing that experience for a period of time should wake him up and cause him to evaluate his priorities.  That might even cause him to find a different troupe where the others are actually better than he is.  He might tone down his arrogance or he might not.  I would save any spanking for a time when he is clearly letting his bad attitude ruin his opportunities.

I concur that suspension in lieu of expulsion should be tried. However, with regard to the arrogance, I have a rather different approach that I shall try with Elliot to see if it will reduce this. I will attempt to find instances when Elliot is being arrogant towards others, and then record that behavior(s). Maybe Elliot does not even realize how he comes across to others when he does this. Or, maybe he does not care. Either way, I want to see what empathy Elliot has, and see if that can be developed. By replaying the instances when he is arrogant, I can try doing role-playing with him, and try to increase his empathic nature.

This is the story that was inspired by this BOTD some almost five years ago now:

"Elliott Williams:  The Discipline of the Dance" by Mark Bench

---------------

A note about the picture.  Adric read the referenced story and asked about the BOTD.  I sent him a link to the BOTD and he replied to the BOTD bumping it forward.  (Great idea!)

On most of the older BOTDs, the pictures are no longer available from the host.  That is the case here.  I looked last night to try to find the picture but it seems to have vanished in to the ether.

The picture was a black and white of several boys in dance wear lined up on a stage practicing a routine. "Elliot" was a prominent boy in the front.  His facial expression indicated he was very much in to what he was doing.  Elliot was a 13/14 yo boy of average height and just a tad on the thin side.  As I recall he was wearing dark tights, a white t-shirt and was barefoot.

Dave, I believe that there is a pretty good chance that you might be able to see that picture (and grab a screenshot to pass on to anyone you like) by using The Wayback Machine; an Internet archive tool.

Try this link, and then, Dave, try logging in. I cannot do it as I was not a member here in 2012. But you were.

That's a good try, 18Smacked, but it doesn't work that way... The Wayback Machine crawler is not able to to log in, so it only gets the visitor's version of the site, with no attached pictures.

Yep. We learned that, sadly. Oh well. Wasn't the first time in my life where I was wrong. Probably won't be the last, either; especially with computer issues.
