Among the Christmas presents this year, you bought yourself a new TV for your bedroom. It came with some interesting packaging, which your older son, Adam, found, if broke apart carefully, made great swords. Zeke was all too eager to join in with his big bro.

You watch them a few minutes, then tell them to take it to their play room, and that they're not allowed to use them anywhere else, except outside, because they're too long, and might break something.

The next day, you here a crash and walk in to find too boys, looking upset, who were probably looking like this a few seconds ago:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The crash came from a couple of ornaments being knocked off your Christmas tree and flying halfway cross the room, where one of them landed safely on the couch, but the other one smashed on the corner of the coffee table.

Zeke is only four, and you don't spank him yet, but, at 7, Adam has made more than a couple of bare bottomed trips over your lap.

What exactly is to be done now?

Unless these are expensive or irreplaceable tree ornaments I will use them as a practical demonstration of why I told the pair they could only sword fight in their play room or outside.

(But if theyd broken one of the tree lights and now the whole set didn't work, that could well be a different story Smile )

They are both getting warning stingers calibrated for age. They will know to do as they are told or something more valuable than a bauble might get broken. Little Zeke is not to young for that I don't think

I'll spank them with the swords across their bottoms as dressed - I reckon the 'swords' will break quickly. It won't hurt but may give them sufficient warning of my mild displeasure that next time they'll be just a little more obedient to my word.

Zeke will get several swats as that is equivalent, for his age, to the mild spanking Adam will be getting. The swords are now lost to them.

If this were to happen they would be told to fetch a switch. Shocked

Well unless the Christmas tree is in the play room. At least one person is getting a full spanking and maybe little bro is getting some swats with my hand as well.

I think my real reaction would be a couple of swats for both of them, then sending Adam to his room in expectation of a full spanking. However, by the time I'd cleaned the broken bulb, I would have calmed down, and would then follow Ivor's example.

But of course... I like to see what I'm doing and have always enjoyed looking at full moons whether they are white or red.

I really find myself in Ivor's camp on this one. Unless the decorations are old/irreplaceable (and why would I have those on with little kids?) there's no real reason to over react.

A good telling off with a stingoor or two will suffice.

Natural consequences will suffice here. The swords will be broken up and they will be sent to their room(s) to'wait' while I clear up the shards.

Then, after a little time to stew, a good telling off before being released back into the wild.

A lecture and some stingers will suffice. No real harm has been done. Lesson learned for the time being. I broke three Christmas tree balls myself last year...
