Manny’s Head Is in the Clouds

A Kat Production

Your twelve-year-old son Manny is a real science geek, so when you have to make a business trip to another city with a famous science museum, you decide to make it a family trip. You and your spouse take Manny to the museum, planning to make a day of it.

The visit to the museum, however, turns into a nightmare when Manny wanders off. At first, hoping to avoid the embarrassment of asking security to page Manny, you and your spouse split up and start searching for him. The two of you are close to panicking after an hour of searching and have him paged.

Manny comes to the security desk with an apologetic elderly man, who identifies himself as Dr. Wilkerson, one of the museum’s curators. He explains that Manny and he have been talking about the anthropology exhibit. He did ask Manny where his parents were, but Manny’s confident response that they were in the museum and wouldn’t be worried had satisfied him.

Manny seems honestly astonished that you are upset. He tells you, “I’m not stupid, you know. I’m not going to get kidnapped. You should have known I’d be talking to Dr. Wilkerson. He’s an expert on evolution!”

Is Manny in trouble?

Yes he's in trouble. I think a good old "caveman" spanking when we get back to the room should take care of it!

A cell phone would have solved this issue. Why did we not let Manny have one for something like this?

Anyway, I just don't see that spanking will do any good. Manny honestly doesn't see his error. The point will be to discuss this and help Manny see the problem. Then, if it occurs again (it won't because I will have picked up a cheap pre-paid phone by then) he can drop and bend.

I see both points of view. Manny doesn't want to be treated like a little boy and we the parents want/need to keep tabs on him. I think time for an agreement. Manny is to be the recipient of a mobile phone and will be allowed more autonomy. In return he lets us know where he is and observes any limits we might impose in terms of where and how long. Fail this he gets spanked and puts up with the loss of trust and the consequences that will entail.I am sure he learned much from the learned doctor and my first act should be to thank him for giving him so much of his time to our lad. In private he will get te standard lecture on scaring us to death and letting us know rather than just taking off. No spanking THIS time

one way or another our trip is done. I may not spank him if he won't accept fault, however if his attitude keeps Twisted Evil that is a whole other story.

Absolutely not. After all at that age, Jesus spent 3 days in the temple with his parents searching for him. Neither they, nor you used common sense in searching techniques. You should know his interests better and thus know which section will be the most likely place to find him.

Manny is only in trouble if there were clear expectations that he was going to stay with the family, and if he has a good reason why he didn't answer the pay as you go phone I always give him for these trips... Suspect

Wait, I didn't call Manny before searching Question

I didn't even give him the phone? No

It seems like Manny's not the one who's going to be in trouble. affraid

Seriously though, he should have cleared this with us, and we should have arranged things a bit more completely. And with that cleared up, Manny can use his smarts to explain what else could happen to a kid on his own besides kidnapping, and what happens to 12-yo boys who give their fathers a lot of lip.

"Time flies when you are having fun"

Anybody who has visited an interesting museum with a companion whose interests are even slightly divergent should know that 10 minutes is about the maximum time for staying together. I should have appreciated that and since the visit was mainly for Manny's benefit should have either followed him round like a puppy dog OR made arrangements for meeting up with him again.

I didn't.

Manny's response when I jumped on him was understandable. It was inappropriate - but then who am I to talk?

Natural consequences have taught me a lesson and hopefully we both will learn from today.

Manny is in the clear.

Well Manny, it seems I didn't learn from losing Darren at the Smithsonian; you should have had a phone. I'll take the bite for that.

Seems however that YOU didn't learn either. You walked off without telling us where you'd be and have us worried to death. You know the rules regarding staying together or letting each other know where we are to be.

Better you should cry form a sore rear that your mother and I cry from your loss! You are getting a firm 'reminder' when we get to the hotel room just like Darren did!! Twisted Evil

An afterthought - after re-reading responses.

How on earth did we manage to handle life (and kids)in the days before mobile phones. Question

Taking my own example at the age of 12. Scoot off without telling at the peril of your backside. Normally though one would be cut loose and told to meet up at such and such a place at such and such a time. There was less fear of stranger danger then, more of getting hopelessly lost. This would have applied to big stores, holiday sites, hotels , amusement parks and museums, They were there to be explored at Mannys age

I do remember one time.... I'm thinking it was with my younger brothers, having to go to Lost Parents (at Six Flags over Parents) and having them page. It also happened to me once in my childhood.

The honest truth is that my younger kids get by just fine without cell phones, though there is a bit more risk to their backsides, since not having one means they have to be responsible for being where they're supposed to be, when they're supposed to be.

The real question is, how many spanking stories have been lost because a parent can just call and find out what's going on now?

We didn't wander away from the Rents or whomever was in charge of us and as we got older we could wander but only with others and we had set check in times and locations.

If we didn't comply, and once we were found, we wished very much we had complied with the dang rules. Embarassed Embarassed
