Brady's Blues

An Ivor Production

You work nights. Your wife has a bad back from an old car accident. Therefore when it snows you 14 year old son Brady, is responsible for clearing the snow off the drive so your wife can get the car out and take him and his younger sister to school.

When you get home this is what you find

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

No snow cleared and Brady sitting in the back yard. When you ask him why he hasn't done the snow clearing he says that he didn't feel like it and besides school would have been cancelled. In fact school hasn't been cancelled because you live outside of town and there was very little snow in town.

Are you going to warm Brady up with a cup of hot chocolate - or something else?

Oh Brady's for it... he will find out that a cold butt spanking hurts just a little more! Where is the hairbrush?

How did I get home? and where's my car?

Assuming I drove, and my car got in (or out) of the drive, I'm going to take the kids to school, and let Brady know that if the drive isn't cleared after school, before I leave for my night shift, he's going to be a very sorry boy.

I think before school spankings are a guarantee for disaster (unless they're a couple of smacks to get a kid moving in the morning). The photo doesn't look like the snow is all that deep to me. He gets another chance. If I'm too exhausted after my shift to drive to school, I'm too exhausted to give a spanking.

I am with Kier, but if it isn't cleared when I leave for work, his BUTT is toast, and then some.

That's not an acceptable answer from my fourteen year old. It is his job to clear the snow without regard to it's depth and in the morning before school. I too don't like the idea of a before school spanking or the promise of one when he gets home, so I;ll take advantage of the opportunity to threaten him if the snow is not cleared an hour before I need to leave for my next shift, leaving me ample time to blister his butt before I leave.

This is hard for this warm Southern boy to answer. I barely know what a snow shovel is and flurries will close the schools here and send the whole town in the grocery.

I like that Kier points out that my car is mobile.

He can have until tomorrow to clear the drive, or, maybe I can get Darling's car out without the drive being cleared. Or, maybe he and I can clear the drive together.

I just don't see the big deal. Here snow is a rarity and is time for play, not time for work.

Up here in the Deep North it was usually work before play in the snow. At fourteen a boy/young man was expected to clear away the snow particularly if the Dad was not around to help in any way. Girls were expected to help too, but the primary mover would be the boy.

If Brady had been actively working at removing the snow it would have been no biggy and Dad would have likely jumped in to help. But to just be sitting there would have meant (would mean) a whippin' to the boy to provide the needed incentive.

Maybe it was just lazyness but maybe there is more behind his behaviour. I don't think there's time to explore before school so either I will take out the car (if I was walking) or we'll take my car to school. Nevertheless we will have 'a talk' after school. Whether it is a talk or more will depend.

I can't tell how big our drive is from the picture, and I have a very biased view of things from where I live, but I think I'm going to call the school and let them know that the heavy snowfall where we live is going to make the kids either very late, or that they won't be there at all.

At 14, Brady should be responsible enough to handle this, but this is a rare duty, so one it's hard for him to grow accustomed to. Later on, he and I will have a long talk about why he needs to do this, and I'll tell him I did consider paddling him for not doing it (more for future reference than anything), but for now I hope I can muster up the energy to throw a few snowballs before we go in for breakfast, and I go to sleep for the day.

My big worry is the attitude Brady is exhibiting, and whether or not he gets to school I have to work if possible. So Brady has to dig in for the family. I think I will get the blood going with a couple of swats and hand him a shovel. I will be checking on him before I get some rest. Hopefully the threat of the paddle after school will get him moving. Oh and if he is late for school he brought it on himself. Brady is old enough to show some responsibility and I am not impressed that he is not helping his mum out.

Largely for the same reasons they pointed out, I'm in alignment with Square and Stoney ( the 's squad' Very Happy ).

Being a in a section of the US that sees its share of the white stuff I expect my son not to be slack about this.

I'm more concerned about the attitude problem and it's this which has the greater ability to earn toasted buns!

I think in the scenario though I'll warn him rather than warm him. The snow isn't all that deep so he can clear it this afternoon. Whether or not he will need to sit down in the snow to cool his rear will be a function of his demeanor when he gets home.

I don't think I'd spank him for this, but we'll have some words about responsibility. How hard is it to turn on the television or radio to check on the school's status, after all?

I'll get back in my car, take Brady and his sister to school then return and clear enough of the drive to ensure my wife's mobility. Mad

After school Brady will "pay" me for my efforts Twisted Evil

I'm taking him to school this morning and when he comes home he will be out there shoveling the snow. No spanking This Time... We will be having a good talk about responsibility and chores though.

I'm with most everyone else. As someone who did live in PA, (Connellsville), and who shoveled her share of driveways this isn't that big a deal. Brady will shovel after school, and will be warned that if it isn't done then he will get spanked.

Holy crap Kittykat; you lived in Connellsville?!? I line in Unity!!!!

We were darn near neighbors!!!

I am AMAZED at the tolerance displayed by most of these answers. After the briefest of enquiries to make sure that "I didn't feel like it" didn't mean "I feel ill" (and it doesn't sound like that), I would have lost my temper at Brady's selfishness and seen red - in more senses than one.

Grrrr!

Thank you Push! (Not to forget Skater & Stoney)

My feelings exactly. Brady is 14 not 10. He needs to display a greater sense of responsibility so instead he can display something else

I'm outta here! (I believe that is the correct US idiom). Let's get back to the fundamental issue - does Brady get a second chance or not? I would say 'yes', butt only after the basic issues have been addressed.
