COLD AND HOT

A DMK Production

Byron - 12

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It is that time of year where you live when it is cold in the mornings but warm by the afternoon. Your twelve year old son, Byron, leaves for school with layered clothing and sometimes a hat and gloves. By the warm afternoon, most of his layers and his hat and gloves end up in his locker. Being warm, he forgets to bring / wear them home. Knowing this, you have two sets of hat and gloves, two jackets and several sweaters for Byron. It seems ALL of Byron's cold weather outer wear is now at school in his locker.

This morning is an especially cold morning yet Byron has none of his outerwear.

What do you do?
How do you help Byron remember to bring his things home?

I guess it depends on how cold is "cold". If it's bitter, dangerous cold, I'm going to drive him to school, retrieve his extra things, have him bring them to me so I'll have the extras at home, and reimburse me for gas.

If it's just nippy, he can deal with the unpleasantness of walking to school--running will help keep him warm til he can retrieve his outerwear, and maybe next time he'll remember.

I once had a (female) coworker who dealt with this issue with her twelve year old son by being a very solicitous mommy in vision and earshot of her son's friends. He was extremely embarrassed and never forgot his things again (at least for the rest of the time I knew her). It was extremely effective, although I always thought it was particularly cruel.

I can't imagine a spanking is going to help much.

If temperature is within the usual limits he'll have do deal with them as he is. I'm sure, he will take his winter stuff home this afternoon.

I rather like Doc's answer to this. Perhaps by being 'helpful' to the point of embarrassment will jog his memory. I really can't see spanking for this; let natural consequences fall into place and he'll catch a clue.

Well, I may have a jacket that is a bit too big, then I will give him a note for his pocket that says to bring home ALL the winter clothes.

Looks like Byron is in for a chilly time. Unless in danger of hypothermia he can just be cold. If he has his mobile I will text him later to remind him to get the stuff from his locker and bring it home. A perfect object lesson

Unless its 20º below zero with deep snowdrifts (and I guess that by then the school would be closed anyway) it looks like time for natural consequences to take over.

A nice jog will have him glowing and alert for lessons.

While a spanking woud warm his butt it wouldn't do much for the rest of him. Thus I'm onboard the MM train.

Always wear gloves when there is ice on the ground. Anybody can suddenly slip. If you are not wearing gloves you will instinctively try to protect your hands, rather than allow yourself to simply fall forward to the ground and use your hands to protect your body.

Anyway, I'm going to whack him.

Twisted Evil I'll talk with him and suggest a 3-strikes system, like the one Jack has for house chores.

Although I could warm part of him up to help out, I won't. Like others have said, as long as it's not the coldest day of the century he can go on like usual and freeze on his way to school. Running will warm him up! I have a feeling he will be coming home this afternoon with a pile of winter clothes!

Just looking at the picture, I'd like to say a good spanking would keep him warm. The honest truth, however, is that this isn't a spanking situation (unless he's had a lot of warnings).

As for getting for school, I'm very tempted to say he's going to ride with me in just his school clothes. He wont' freeze in the car, and maybe the quick walk inside will be a good reminder to bring stuff home.

In longer terms, we'll get him a gym bag or a larger backpack, and he'll be instructed to stuff anything that comes off into the bag and bring it home every day. Maybe we can work out a fine system for every day everything's not at home.

When he gets home, he's coming out of those old, stained jeans he was told to throw away, and going over my lap for a discussion about disobedience. Twisted Evil

By getting him warm enough to make his way to school without the extra clothing? Rolling Eyes

Its highly unlikely my boy is the only child in the school leaving his/her warm clothes behind.

I have found that political correctness has ended the end of the day announcements that school secretaries used to make on behalf of Johnny's mother for him to bring his warm clothing home because she loves him and doesn't want him to be cold in the morning. Those announcements embarrassed the heck out of Johnny, but served to clear out lots of lockers.

Concur with the general tone here. No punishment, but a consequence: he's going to have to make a trip to fetch all his winter clothing home. Give him a duffel bag and one of my coats (probably too large, probably "un-cool" in another sense, but oh well) and tell him this is what happens if you keep forgetting. Rolling Eyes

Hey, old man, these are brandnew, state of the art and very expensive jeans you bought me the other day...

My second son got some cash from his grandmother for Christmas when he was 17. He knew exactly what he wanted to buy and came back from the mall with a pair of jeans that was faded, stained and ripped and had holes.

Me: "They came like this? You are telling me that you bought 'new' jeans that look like this?"

Todd: "Yep, they are distressed. They were a good deal too, only $120."

Talk about distressed. affraid

I'd have been tempted to tell him that next time you'll buy him a "good" new pair and then distress them for him with HIM in them. Razz

I agree with everyone else. Unless the temperature is dangerously low, he can walk.
