JAKE'S GOOD NEWS!

A JTT Production

You, your spouse, and your 12 year old son Jake are on vacation in Florida. While taking a break from the waves, you all visit some shops that are along the beach. Jake finds some things that he wants to get as souvenirs, a few T-shirts, a watch, and a pair of sunglasses. Jake has his own money, which he saved from mowing lawns over the summer, along with some spending money from you and his grandparents. While you and your spouse move on the the next little shop, Jake goes and pays for his things. Soon enough Jake catches up to you guys, he is eager to share some good news, the cashier didn't ring up the sunglasses! Jake noticed that the barcode didn't scan when the girl rang it up, and excited that he saved $30.

What Happens Next?

We go back to the cashier with the receipt and point out that the cashier forgot to ring up the sunglasses.

If the cashier is VERY nice, she'll thank Jake for pointing it out and let him have the sunglasses. If she's less nice, she'll ring up the sunglasses, and Jake will pay for them. If she's stupid--which has happened to me a lot, she'll argue she didn't make a mistake, and Jake and I will say thank you and leave.

Either way, Jake needs to understand that walking out with an object not paid for, or having received too much change without pointing it out to the cashier is a form of theft. By the same token, if the cashier insists he/she could never make a mistake after having it pointed out to them, that's their problem.

I agree but it might not be within her authority to do so.

I truly do not think Jake realizes what he has done is a form of theft. I simply just need to explain the issue to him. He was obviously willing to pay for the glasses initially and so I will go back with him to the shop and let him explain the error and offer to pay.

With that said, I am with Kier and Dimitri.

If he argues with me, gives me 'lip' or refuses to go back . . . Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad That will not bode well for his backside.

I will talk with Jake about what he has done and explain how what he's done could be considered stealing. I'm certain he will suggest returning to tell the cashier, but would really like me to go along with him.

Shocked I know my son would be smarter than that. However since he is not, we go back and he pays for the glasses, then I take the glasses, and we will go back to the hotel. I will hand spank him but tell him he is lucky the brush isn't having this talk with him.

Yes! Thanks JTT. An interesting one

My apparent earlier flippant response was sparked by reading between the lines and inferring that I had already failed in my duty to inculcate Jake with any moral principles and that he was EXPECTING me to celebrate with him.

Well done JTT on your first BOTD. A nice moral dilemma. Kier has it right I'm afraid. Tempted as I am to think how lucky for my son, it is technically theft and I will take him back lest the shop suddenly accuse him of not putting the sunglasses on the counter in the first place. We will talk and hopefully I can clear up this little hole in Jakes moral code. There will be no punishment unless Jake tries to argue about this. I like Stonemans way of getting Jake to realize the right course of action for himself.

I'm with Kier, though I will offer to pay for half the cost of the sunglasses myself. I don't want Jake to think that next time he should just keep his mouth closed. Smile

Thanks Kat, that was bothering me the whole day. If I make him go back and pay, will he next time just keep silent? From his point of view, he had done nothing wrong, since he put it on the counter to pay but wasn't charged. How to explain that knowing the cashier made a mistake and taking the glasses is kind of stealing but taking the glasses without realising there was an error would be not?

I ask Jake if he thinks it was right. I know it's not stealing, and I can certainly understand him being excited about it, but I'm sure that, if I just calm him down and help him think it through, he'll know what the right thing to do would be.

Then we'll go do it.

I'm not going to pay for the sunglasses for him, but I will probably get him an extra little treat somewhere and let him know that I'm proud of him.

You have to watch those scanners. Sometimes they charge too much.

Can't wholly agree with Kier. Unless the cashier is also the store owner s(h)e will be compounding the theft by just allowing Jake to keep the glasses.

Well, you have a point, but if the cashier refuses to take the money what can you do? The issue is between the cashier and the store owner then, as far as I am concerned. The cashier is the legal representative of the owner there.
