You and your family have just moved to a new neighborhood.

Your 12-year old son, Kevin...
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

... is obviously tired of unpacking and putting things away. There are a couple of things you need, and a convenience store just a couple of blocks away. You ask Kevin if he'd like to run up there and get them for you.

He's happy enough to do it.

As soon as he leaves, you get back to work, so you don't really notice that it takes a bit longer than expected, until you end up realizing he's been gone at least 45 minutes. You call his cell and receive no answer, so you let your spouse know what's going on, and you walk up there yourself.

He's not at the store, though the clerk says he was there. You leave the store, wondering if you should get in your car and drive around or call the police. Before you can decide, you hear noise around the corner (opposite of how you came). Checking it out, you see a small apartment complex, and a number of kids are outside, playing soccer, including Kevin.

What's your next move?

(He didn't hear his phone, because he was just too busy/noisy in his play).

He's twelve, he sees nothing wrong with what has happened. I am glad he is making new friends in the neighborhood. I will quietly pull him aside and explain the issue to him and remind him he should have called. He gets a pass this time. I will then take the goods Kevin purchased home and let him get back to his game with a set time to be home. He can finish unpacking later.

What David said. His getting over the "trauma" of moving and his making new friends in the new neighborhood are more important right now, particularly since there was no direct disobedience, just thoughtlessness.

I will take him aside, tell him, he should have called. I will then say I will not embarrass him in front of his friends, but we needed to discuss this more. If he is polite, we talk when he gets home, if he gives me 12 YO TUDE, I will promise him more than a talk, as well as maybe dragging him home if I have to.

Was it some important stuff that I needed as quick as possible? Had I told him so? Then he might be in some trouble. On the other hand, he's just a kid. He is supposed to play and the sooner he makes new friends the better. Unpacking has time, it won't run away... Wink

So as punishment I will embarass him a bit in front of his new friends by ruffling his hair or planting a kiss on his forehead and setting a time I want him at home.

He's tired of unpacking .but it seems his attitude was ok when asked to go to the store. So I am going to take a lenient view since he is managing to make new friends already. I will take the goods off him, give him a time to get home and remind him to ring me next time he wants to stay out. Oh and turn the phone up louder. I don't want to embarrass him in front of the kids he is just getting to know. Provided the attitude is good I will leave him to it.

Poor Kevin is quite shocked when he looks up from the game and sees me standing there staring at him. He excuses himself from his new mates and comes over to me whilst his face gets redder and redder.

I quickly let him know that I'm only a little bit angry with him, it being a matter of his safety rather than disobedience. We'll set a time for his return and request he regularly check his cell for missed calls.

I'm sorely tempted to kiss him on the forehead and give him a parting stingoor, but those things can wait until he knows his new chums better... or at least until he gets home tonight.

It's good to see him making friends so soon and I'm not about to mess that up. I too will collect the stuff he was sent for and give him a specific time to be back along with that reminder to either turn up his ringer or pay better attention to it.

He's dodged the bullet this time!! Razz

This one seems to be pretty unanimous.

I can't really see spanking him for this, possibly unless I told him that I needed him to come straight back. As it is, I think he probably meant to just stop for a second and got distracted.

I will talk to him later about how he should have handled it, but it'll be all verbal this time.
