Callum the Artist!

An Ivor Production

Last winter when the snow came down your 14 year old son Callum drew something in it. The old lady who lives next door phoned you to complain about it saying it was offensive. You told Callum to remove it which he did and also told him he was not to draw anything similar in the future.

This morning when you look out of the window this is what you see

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

You call Callum in and remind him of what you told him last year and say that he has now earned his bare backside an appointment with your slipper - your usual method of punishment for him.

Callum responds by saying that the old lady isn't at home this weekend so she can't see it and be offended. If she had been he wouldn't have drawn it.

You point out that you told him not to draw anything similar in the future, not just when old Mrs Higgs was at home.

He retorts 'That's not fair'.

Has he earned himself a reprieve or a reduction in sentence which you both know would be six whacks.

Shocked I will ask him what he drew. Depending on his answer he is either getting licks with my belt, or he just will destroy it before grouchy neighbor sees it.

I think it's sort of funny. After all, snow graffiti is very temporary. I'll tell him to remove it and warn him that if there is any more bitching from the neighbor, I'll send him to do the placating.

I'm with the birthday boy. It's temporary and harmless. There is worse on public network television.

The suburbs are no place for barnyard humor. In fact, one of the few benefits of growing up in the sticks was that we could do crap like this with utter impunity as long as no adults saw us.

You had your laugh, now remove it before you offend the neighbor. You were warned about this; if it happens again you can be warmed about it!

For starters is this in my backyard?

If it is, I would tell the nosey nieghbor (if she called a second time) that if she does not like it then she can stop looking into my yard.... tongue

If it is my front yard, then I will ask him to please go and remove it and talk with him about why this is not okay....and explain that if you have a home owners group you could be fined. I will let him know if he wants he can do it the back yard... after all he does need to be a boy and express himself......I think it's kinda Razz and it will melt soon enough!!!

Yuh know what? I kinda like Kal's answer here. If it's in my back yard and out of view of 'the general public' my neighbor can mind her own darned 'bidness'.

As long as there's no HOA to appease he can be a boy to his heart's content!!!

Kalico gets my vote as well!

This is a 15-year old kid. He thinks he's being funny, and that anyone who doesn't find it that way has just forgotten what it's like to be a kid. In a way, he's right. It's not that I've forgotten, however, but that I've come to understand that sometimes you have to consider other people's views.

I'm going to praise Cul for not doing this in a more permanent medium, and then remind him that this kind of thing might be funny to him, but it's not to everyone, and he needs to destroy or modify it now. (It also depends on whether anyone else can see it from outside our house/yard, but we have to consider his mother as well).

Honestly, it's been a year - there might be some reason to snap at him, but I doubt CP will have any good effect.

Skater somehow missed part of this scenario which I had written underneath the picture.

I will thus post it now in case it influences anyone's decision

Callum gets 4 with the slipper as I may not have made myself clearon whether it mattered that our neighbor was home. Then he can remove it and without the attitude unless he wants another dose

I'll congratulate him on his excellent illustration of my paddle .... and then send him to fetch it. Very Happy Twisted Evil

Well, if I had said specifically 'don't do it again', this is direct disobedience and we all know what that buys in my house!

Somehow though I can't envision myself laying down a blanket statement like that now. When I first married maybe, but now....I like to think I've grown into a better dad than that.

I think it would make a difference if the neighbour weren't at home if she's the reason for issuing the edict. Once again, we have the difference between kid-think and adult-think. He's reprieved, with a reminder that he'd better check before deciding that exceptions apply.

NOPE wont change mine......I kinda think it hypocritical if I am Razz , I think after I've explained what could happen if you have HOAs and the fact if I get a fine he is paying for it he would get rid of it.....as long as it's in my back yard HAVE AT IT KIDDO!!!!!

I can't imagine myself telling a kid he deserves a hard spanking (? - I'm assuming six with a slipper on the bare is pretty hard), for something that I had told him a year ago. Now, if I'd told him a week ago, then he'd probably be in for it.
