THE SHOPPING TRIP
A DMK Production

Your nine year old son, Taylor, loves to go with you on your weekly shopping trip to the local super store.  Taylor enjoys looking at the various toys and games and usually spends most of his allowance on each trip.  Taylor's issue is that he wanders off from you without you knowing where he is.  In a crowded store, you consider this a safety issue.  You have warned Taylor several times to stay with you but he always manages to stray off.  You promise that he will have a chance to shop for what he wants.

Today you and Taylor are in the store and it is especially crowded.  As usual, Taylor wanders off.  This time you are not able to readily find him and even involve store personnel in trying to locate him.

Finally, to your relief, Taylor is located.

How do you deal with Taylor?

Question: "How do you deal with Taylor?"

I put aside my unwarranted fear and get Taylor either a cell phone or each of us, Family radios!

If it is the same store we usually go to... where would I find a boy if not at the toy section?

However, I can't really relate to the scenario since our stores aren't that huge... Embarassed

Perhaps the safety issue is exaggerated, as abductions from stores are, to say the least, rare. Nevertheless, children have, even if rarely, been molested by strangers in stores; and aside from the safety issue, there is the question of convenience. When a child wanders off, finding him again can be difficult in a large store. You may expect he is in the toy section, which is itself sometimes very large, but it's easy to cross back and forth searching for one another and still keep missing each other. I recently had a boy of about the same age as Taylor come up to me in Costco and announce that he couldn't find his grandmother. I escorted him to the customer service desk, but while we were waiting, he spotted his grandmother -- happy ending, but very anxious moments for the little boy (incidentally, very cute, and named Richard) and probably for his grandmother. I've warned Taylor repeatedly and been reasonable in promising him his opportunity to shop. I'm going to give him a choice between a spanking or wearing a leash for the next month whenever we go to this store.

he has earned a spanking, and maybe next time, he doesn't get to go with me to the store.

A leash on a 9 year old!! Kat, that is cruel and unusual punishment! It leaves Taylor with no choice but to take the spanking - but maybe that is what you wanted Evil or Very Mad

I think it is mainly toddlers where this is a  worry in the UK. The stores aren't so big, just a few out of town places but nothing on the Walmart scale.

I think I will on this occasion try one of those new fangled affraid  natural consequence type punishments on Taylor. We will NOT be stopping to buy a toy on this occasion. Perhaps he will remember that next time he considers wandering away from me.

I"m going to do what I should have done in the first place. Taylor's not going on anymore shopping trips for a while. That should convince him that I mean what I say.

I actually like Jack's answer to this and shall steal it as mine.

Now, off to the prior BoTD's that I've missed while here at camp (and do I have some stories!!!) and have been out of touch.

Taylor will be left at home for a time or two as he can't seem to stay with me even with the promise of him having time with me to shop.

I like the leash or spanking choice if it comes to that. I can't imagine a nine year old picking the leash, or for very long if he did.
