Jody's Accident?
An Ivor Production

This is a picture you too of your son 12 year old son Jody about fifteen minutes ago. He is basically a good kid but can be headstrong and you find yourself having to spank him from time to time - something that works quite well with him.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

He had just finished his weekend chore of tidying up the driveway and you complimented him of a job well done. You also warned him that if he wanted to play soccer he should make sure to move the china ewer and basin that is standing on the table as they are grandma's and you don't want them broken. He agrees to do so and you go inside.

About ten minutes later you hear a crash and when you go outside the ewer and basin are lying shattered in pieces on the ground. Jody tells you that he didn't bother to move them because he has such good ball control he was never likely to kick the ball anywhere near them - but of course he did.

Are you going to be able to control yourself from taking him inside and giving him a good spanking?

I'm torn. I can make a case that this is "direct disobedience", but it's clearly also an accident, and these things happen.

I don't think I'm going to have any trouble keeping myself from giving him a "good spanking". I do think some stingoors accompanied by "that's why I told you to move those things before kicking a ball around" would be in order. I'm not going to reward disobedience and destruction, no matter how accidental, with a trip to a pizza and ice cream parlor (unless it's the REAL Danny's Diner).

I'm with Skateski. Sometimes the smashing of these things is a blessing in disguise. I must have subconsciously wanted to be rid of the things or I wouldn't have taken them outside.

I'm with Kat and Skater. I need to assume some responsibility here myself. Obviously I didn't care for the ugly stuff as much as I thought I did.

But, Kier has a point too. A well placed stingoor would emphasize what happens when directions aren't followed.

So, I will slap his butt and say, "This is what happens." We will then clean up the mess and life goes on and I am rid of trying to find a place to store the ewer.

BTW, just what is an ewer?

Even if I didn't particularly like the piece, it was my Grans' and so would have at least that value. I gave instructions and I expect them to be followed. He gets more than stingoors but less than a spanking as a reminder that I mean no when I say it.

It was an accident, but avoidable, by him and by me. In at least 15 years of parenting I should have learned that the best way to avoid accidents is to remove valueable and/or dangerous things. So it would have been easy to take the things with me when I went inside. On the other hand he should have minded me. So, if Granny is still with us, he will tell her and apologise.

We tend to hit our growth spurts early in my family, but GEEZ! that's a big 12-year old.

The first thing I'm going to do is remind Jody of how to use a dictionary, so he can check a definition.

"Accident" n. - An unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury.

With that out of the way, I'm going to let Jody know that I will not punish someone for an honest accident, but that I will punish them for disobeying me and deliberately lying.  Balancing his age and size, I'd imagine he's going to bend over the stool to renew his acquaintance with Black.

And yes, I was also wondering why I would have left this thing outside (in Texas, sun can kill just abou anything, and even straight line wind can do damage to things weighing more than that).
