It's time to leave for your annual trip to Arlington. You're not only taking your kids, but some of your nieces and nephews, and the kids from a few other families. An assortment of parents are also going with you, and several of them are car pooling (since you made the hotel reservations as a group).

In the last ten days or so, your son, Van's, two does gave birth to eleven rabbit babies. Van has been doing pretty good with them, and the mothers seem to be doing fine, but as time to leave closed in, Van began suffering from separation anxiety.

Van (11) with the cause of his anxiety issues...

You've talked it over with Van. He trust the people who'll be carrying for the bunnies while he's gone, and they've promised to call and let him know how they're doing every day. Still, as time comes to leave, he's getting pretty clingy.

It's now time to go. You got the luggage loaded, and thought you had all the kids lined up, but when you turned around, Van was gone. Sure enough, he was in his room, double checking the 'care notes' he left. You let him finish, then escort him back outside. You get everyone loaded in the cars, so you know with whom the little are riding. You turn around, and Van's not in the car. You go back to his room, and he's 'just checking on the babies'. You explain to him that he'll make the mothers nervous, and he's already making you nervous, so he needs to get outside and stay there. Now, most of the cars in the caravan have departed, but as you get in, you release there's an empty seat. Sure enough, it's Van, and you find him back in his room.

How comfortably will he be sitting for the trip?

This is annoying but I also understand.

I will personally put Van in th evehicle and make sure he is backled in and we will be off.

No spanking. I do understand. I am just glad we weren't faced with a modern day Home Alone.

I agree with David, tempting though it may be. Perhaps a stingoor en route back to the vehicle.

As aggravating as this would be to me, I don't have the heart or a really good reason to spank Van. I need to make room for him between two big kids so he can't escape again, along with the threat of a spanking if he should try.

Dealing with over-protective mothers IS a problem.

I certainly couldn't spank him for being concerned about his pets. Better too much sense of responsibility than not enough.

I will remind him what continued disobedience can get him, then remind him the bunnies will be fine. Last I will escort him out to the car, get him buckled in, and let him in on a promise if he leaves that seat before we leave.

Depends if he resists arrest! Everybody understands about the bunnies and I certainly don't want Van to travel on a sore bottom but he is coming with me NOW. As suggested he will be meat in the sandwich next to two bigger lads in the car

Highly aggravating, but understandable I guess.

I think I should have put one of the older boys in charge of him when he first disappeared

Three times is at least one too many. I'm going to give him another task to take him mind off his bunnies. "Go and cut a switch!"

I'm not going to use it on him but want to bring home that acts of disobedience have consequences. Once he's in the car, I'll discard the switch but hope I'll have made my displeasure sufficiently clear.

I agree with Kat and Stoney. As soon as Van is seated between 2 other boys I will drive off, leaving no chance for him to check again.

I wish I'd had that idea, Ivor - or putting him between two older boys. Part of the trouble, however, was that everyone wanted to sit next to their friends, so we were sorting seats out among several different vehicles (another reason Van's behavior was such a problem, since I didn't want to end up starring in Home Alone 5: Bunny Bandits).

Part of Chuck and Clint's payment for all the work they do for us the rest of the year is that they go to Six Flags with us, and we get someone else (it used to be Guy, before he went back to NY for college, but this time Mary and my brother Ben) to handle it. If it had been Chuck and Clint, Van might not have been quite so nervous.

Van did get a few 'held by the arm' swats, since I'd already specifically told him to sit and stay. Not only did I try to be understanding about his nervousness, but I remember getting spanked right before a trip, and how miserable that can make you, so I really try to avoid it.

Chuck had to work Sunday afternoon, so I'd arranged for him to catch a ride Monday morning and join us. I offered to ask Freddie if Van could stay with them that night and ride in with Chuck the next morning. Van really didn't want to do that, so he and I reviewed the fact that we're not really doing anything for the babies anymore. We still check them daily, but we've shown Mary and Ben both what they need to look for, and Van has the rabbit food ready and labeled, and Chuck is coming back Tuesday night, so he can get back to work, and he'll take over the rabbit car then.

We went back and got in the car (after I informed Van that he'd had his last chance, and he'd get the large spoon if I had to come back again). I'm not going to say he hasn't thought about the rabbits at all since then, but he's certainly been distracted and enjoying himself most of the time.

Good to hear Van is allowing himself to enjoy the trip.

Aw, Van was worried about his albino rabbit rabbit

I hope he is having lots of fun! And less anxiety about his babies I love you
