HEY, YOU, GET OUT OF MY CAR!
A KittyKat Production

Your fifteen-year-old son, Tanner, has a learner's permit.  This means he can only drive legally with an adult over twenty-five in the car with him.  Tanner wants to impress a girl.

*TANNER - 15
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Tanner thinks a good way to impress the girl will be to demonstrate his driving skills.  He takes your car without your permission or knowledge and drives it in order to show off for the girl.  You catch him in the act.

What happens next?

Simple answer: Tanner's gettin' a tanned tail! Twisted Evil

And, it will be a while before he gets his learner's permit back - a long while. Let's see how impressive he looks on a bicycle.

Oh, no doubt whatsoever; he is toast! A L-O-N-G spanking followed by 12 of my choicest with the stop.

The permit is GONE!  He can re-apply for one in 6 months IF he can demonstrate some maturity during this time period.

I hope that this will quell the show off in him.

Safety and legal issue. It is time for him to go cut a switch. I will not get the law involved, so his permit will not be officially revoked, but I will take it, and it will be quite a while before he gets it back. And I will insist that he spend at least 6 months practicing driving before he can try to get his full license. So this means that getting his full license will be delayed.

My reaction will depended on how Tanner was driving!

How will I know? I bought a dashcam off EBAY for $26 postpaid: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-2-5-HD-Car-LED-DVR-Road-Dash-Video-Camera-Recorder-Camcorder-LCD-270-/181120661244?pt=US_Surveillance_Digital_Video_Recorders_Cards&hash=item2a2ba1f6fc ,

Tanner gets a licking, I will take his permit for an undisclosed amount of time, Before he gets it back, I shall make him write the rule and consequence of what he broke from the rules of the road book 300 times.

I'm with Katz. He's lucky I'm the one who caught him instead of the police. And he's even luckier that he didn't cause any damage to himself (beyond a sore bottom which will be temporary) or the vehicle.

Mmmmm..... I wonder if his girlfriend will be impressed by the stripes on his butt?

I wonder that too Ivor. Tanners picking a switch and we will see how a month without a learners permit will affect his behaviour. Hope he still has the girlfriend. Will she have told HER folks about this

I would probably remind Tanner that illegal acts earn the switch, and what he does violates the law, and is therefore illegal. After letting his sweat that for a few moments, we'd talk about exactly why this was such a bad idea (everything from the insurance issues, to the fact that he could loose the right to drive until he's 21, to the idea that a girl who needs to be impressed might not be the best choice in the first place). I would then lay out his choices, which would probably be a real session with the medium Lexan (probably his age), a whipping with the leather paddle, or a very intense grounding.

It's a big deal, but I think that losing his learner's permit for a month will get that across to him. A month is a long time in the life of a 15 year old. At fifteen, he's really too old for corporal punishment, and while I might be tempted to withhold his license for a longer period, I think that will backfire. Open-ended punishments are unfair, arbitrary and ineffective. Being on best behavior for a month gives Tanner a realistic goal, whereas taking away his learner's permit indefinitely just frustrates him into rebellion.

In general, this is true, but as an actual parenting tip, I've found that something that can be very effective... it's not open or closed ended, but it's not timed either. I suppose you could call it a goal-oriented grounding. I don't use this much, but I know a couple of father's who have (remember Duffy and his grounding issues last winner?). You give the kid a stack of assignments, whether chores, homework, or whatever, and they're grounded until they complete it (to your satisfaction). It's kind of closed-ended, but it really leaves it in their hands as to how long it takes.

Can't think of much to add here. Tanner gets a very big spanking with my belt, the kind that really wears him out. That about covers it really.

Okay, so now that we've had responses I'll tell what happened.

The other day I was cooking dinner, and Tyler snuck out with my keys and took a joyride around the block in my car, in my 1965 Mustang, to impress a new girl whose family just moved in a couple houses down.

I was too angry to deal with him, so when Jake came home he handled it. He got a whipping with the belt on his bare butt, about 20 swats, because of the seriousness of it. He's also lost his permit for the time being until I decide he's mature enough to have the responsibility back.

Sounds pretty fair to me, Kitty. The one thing I'd say is that I do pretty much agree with Kat. Once you're a bit calmer, I'd seriously considering establishing some guidelines about what he needs to do, instead of just leaving it up to how you feel at the time.

Of course, if someone went joyriding in my Jag (and I'll admit that your baby is sweeter than mine), I'm not sure how fair I'd be wanting to be about things.

Thanks Jack,

It's going to be at least a month because I want to make sure he knows how serious this was. He could have been killed, or killed someone else because of not knowing how to properly control a vehicle.

Tanner is getting tanned... reddened is more like it, plus loosing his permit for at least a month.
