FOOD BANK VOLUNTEER
A DMK Good Boy Production

Your son Eddie is fourteen and has become very civic minded.  He volunteers every Saturday at a local food bank packing and preparing food boxes for delivery to the needy.  He has even organized other kids from his church and school to help as well.

EDDIE - 14  - WORKING AT THE FOOD BANK

As Eddie is moving a box, he moves wrong and drops the box.  Several of the contents of the box are ruined and broken open.  Eddie feels horrible.  He knows how hard it is for the food bank to get donations of food and cash.  Eddie has money from mowing yards and so he "pays for" the box he broke.  He hands the event coordinator fifty dollars and says he needs to replace what he damaged.  The coordinator tells him that accidents happen and that his volunteer labor and recruitment efforts are far more valuable to them and no payment is needed.  Eddie insists and stuffs the fifty in the coordinator's pocket.

The coordinator happens to be a good friend of yours and comes by the house that afternoon and explains what happened.  He gives you the fifty dollars and asks you to return it to Eddie feeling you can help  your son realize he was not required to replace the damaged items.

What are you going to do?

How dare Eddie be so careless! I will bare him and give him a sound spanking with my hand and then add on a long session with the belt. After he is totally sore and bawling he will think twice about being so cavalier with other people's food.

Um . . . sorry . . . my inner spanko slipped out. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Embarassed

I will take the fifty back and try to explain things to Eddie. If Eddie is still adamant about the issue then he can make an anonymous donation to the food bank.

pretty much what Katz has said other then I think it would be best if my son is still insistent that we just go buy the food and drop it off that way they have to keep it....lol

Like DMK, I'll take the 50 and encourage Eddie to keep it. It he remains adamant, we'll find a way to donate the money while making Eddie see that he isn't financially responsible for accidents--this is a voluntary contribution, not a fine.

I'm going to use it as a teachable moment.  Eddie can make an anonymous donation to the food bank.  Charity is best as an anonymous gesture, with no expectation of reward or even recognition.  As far as that goes, there is nothing wrong with Eddie giving even more, if he wants.  There is nothing wrong with giving 'til it hurts....

Eddie is a good boy who will probably get a break on his next spankable moment.

I'll thank the coordinator for sharing the good news about my son. I've always known he was a great kid, but it never hurts to hear it from others.

Eddie needs to learn that accidents are accidents and that his labor more than covers any looses due to accidents. If he can't let it go, I will suggest to Eddie that we go buy the specific items to replace what was damaged.

I'll tell the coordinator that Eddie has done what he feels he needs to do and ask him to accept Eddie's decision.

I'll discuss it with Eddie, but if he is still insistent that he wants to make up the loss, so be it. Maybe I can find a way to make up some of Eddie's financial loss. scratch

I'm going to sit down with Eddie, explain to him that the coordinator gave me his money back and why. I will point out the same thing Eddie knows, which is that we're human, and accidents happen. I will also point out that the amount of work he does is worth much more than the cost of one box.

I will then get a bit specific. I honestly think Eddie should keep this money, simply because yard work is not a year round thing, and I know he's going to want the money for things that I'll probably end up paying for. To me, this is a chance to teach him about budgeting.

I think what I'm going to do is remind him of why he wanted the money, and of upcoming things (Christmas gifts, Halloween parties, video games), for which he'll want the money. If he still wants to donate the money after all that, we'll do it. However, while I won't let him miss parties or anything, I'll remind him of this when he asks me for casual cash. I don't want him to feel that 'no good deed goes unpunished,' but I also want him to learn that you have to live within your means, even when you're giving for a good cause (it's called 'sacrifice' for a reason).

For every spanking you earn between now and 15 Nov, I'll donate $1 to the food bank. Two if it's with the brush, and five for any switchings. Twisted Evil

I will talk with him. If he is adamant to compensate the damage I will suggest he does a couple of hours more volunteer work than usual, what will help them probably more than his money.

Btw, I think the writing on the blue shirt's back is quite adequate: "Boxing Team" Laughing
