Your son, Stanley, is best friends with Barry. Both boys are 12.

Both boys are fond of practical jokes. While both of them have learned (through several lectures and as many trips over parental laps) not to include others in their jokes, they still enjoy pranking each other, and are constantly trying to one up each other.

This past weekend, Barry's family was out of town, and Stanley was looking after their pets. Making a quick run to the dollar store, Stanley picked up some rubber spiders and snakes, and hid them in Barry's bathroom.

When Barry's family got home, his dad ran for the bathroom. After a few moments, his mother couldn't wait, so she ran for Barry's bathroom. She flipped on the light even as she was jumping for the toilet, only to see something fall as she put down the seat.

And the screaming began.

There wasn't much question what happened, and who did it. Now you've been called. Stan was laughing at first, until he realized it was Barry's mom that got caught.

What happens next?

Aw cummon!!  Lighten up a bit; even I wouldn't be so mean as to spank for this.

Stan put them in Barry's bathroom.  It wasn't intended that Mom should fall afoul of the joke; I see that as a legitimate accident.

Even though I am deathly terrified of snakes, as countless rubber snakes in my sleeping bag through the years with my scouts will attest, I don't generally do more than scream at its discovery and then yell at the boys once I discover it's a fake.

I will however suggest that Stan tell Barry's mom he's sorry she had the scare as a courtesy, but no spanking for this one!

I don't care of spiders or snakes (we don't have any dangerous species) and Mum should know better. No spanking (unfortunately).

Stanley looks a sweet boy. The prank wasn't meant for Barrys mom so I agree with Dimitri. I also agree he should apologize. Secretly no doubt he will probably be splitting his sides. He should beware of unintended consequences and that parents , especially Moms can turn up in all sorts of places, in their own home

I would expect Stanley to say he's sorry to Barry's Mom for scaring her, and I'd expect him to get a hug and a few sharp swats but all in fun like the spiders and snakes.

And that will be the end of it.

10 years later at dinner over in Barry's house.

Barry:

Say Mom do you remember that time when Stanley put those snakes and spider's in my Bathroom?

Mom:

I sure do, what a fuss I made at the time.

Stanley:

I still cringe every time I think of it, are you still mad at me Mrs. Smith. Of course, Barry thought it was hilarious.

Mom:

He would, I was at the time Stan, but I must admit it does have it's funny side, now I look back on it.

Barry:

I can't remember Stan, did your Dad ever spank you for it?

Stanley:

No, he saw it had it's funny side, he laughed his socks off when he put the phone down.

Mom:

So did Barry's Dad

Barry:

Little Miss Muffet sat on her tuffet eating her curds and whey, along came a spider and sat down beside her and frightened Miss Muffet away.

And so they lived happily ever after. Stanley and Barry eventually found enough cash to buy a joke shop and from what I hear it's doing great! Rumor has it that it was Mrs. Smith who gave them most of the cash for it. She even helps out when Stanley and Barry go on vacation.

The only way I think there'd be any real follow up on this one is if Stan has had a joke explode like this before. I think he needs a careful suggestion to be a bit more careful, and perhaps for it to be tactfully pointed out that just arriving home from a weekend trip might not be when someone's in the best humor. As to doing something wrong... Nah, I agree with everyone else.
