It's a Beautiful Day

An Ivor Production
It is summer. Your 8 year old son Chris, has taken to wandering off during the day as the fields, woods and stream that adjoin your property are a big attraction to him, especially as his best friend has gone off on holiday for three weeks with his parents.

The last time he did it you told him you didn't mind him going wandering as long as he told you beforehand where he was going. You also warned him that if he did it again without telling you he was going to get a spanking. Spankings aren't a common thing in Chris' life but do happen from time to time and he accepts them.

This afternoon you have been busy writing your latest novel as the muse was with you. When she departs you go and look for Chris but he is nowhere to be seen. You realise that his dog 'Rocky' is also not around and the two are virtually inseparable while Chris is at home.

You suspect he has gone off to the stream fishing and head that way. This is the sight you eventually see:

Are you still going to carry through your promise to spank Chris when you get him home?

He was told I don't mind him wandering off so long as he tells me where he's going beforehand. He was warned he was getting a spanking if he did it again--implication, this isn't a first offense. He did it anyway. My fault, because I should have been watching him, muse or no.

Still, this is a safety issue, and I'd have been more frantic than the scenario states if my kid disappeared like that.

A spanking he was promised, and a spanking he will get. Not the mother of all spankings, but one that will make him think about wandering off WITHOUT TELLING ANYONE again.

I like both of these responses.  I totally agree with Skater and I see Kier's point.

I am going to get my pole and join him but before we drown our worms I am going to remind him of our talk and pull him over my knee and give him 2 or 3 sharp smacks.  Then we fish.

I'll start by joining the two and see where the conversation leads. I'm thinking my presence will trigger the memory of our last serious discussion which will then lead to further discussion and a spanking.

Like Kier, it will not be a major one but will make enough of a point that Chris will remember to talk to me about his wanderings ahead of time.

I like the compromise of a mild spanking and then joining him in fishing.

I have no choice. A promise is a promise. Be it punishment, reward or simply a happening, then barring some unforeseen drastic change of circumstances it must be kept if trust between individuals is to be maintained

I agree with everyone above. But seriously, even in a rural area like described, an 8 year old could go missing probably for hours without me noticing? Who's going to spank me?

Are you asking for volunteers, taking applications or do we simply form a queue?  Embarassed   Razz

If he left the house without telling me, then yes, he's getting spanked. At his age, and not being spanked frequently, I agree that enough to warm him up and get some tears going will probably be enough.

If he let me know he'd left the house, and if I knew exactly where to find him, then I'm not spanking, and will just be more explicit about what I expect of him.

Either way, some fishing sounds good to me, too.

I think having said he would get a spanking I have to deliver but I think it might be milder than the lecture. Afterwards I might suggest we get our fishing poles and head back to the river as others suggested. Its too nice a day for moping. My muse might even return

I didn't start wandering until I was ten. I was allowed to visit a school friend and he showed me the way to the railway station a mile from home. Steam trains came and went, there was a signal box with a man turning a big wheel to open the level crossing gates, we stayed for hours. I got into no trouble though. I didn't tell how far I'd wandered.

That was always the ticket for me. I actually started 'exploring' when I was 8, though it was only the creek behind our apartments, and it really only went about two blocks. Now by the time I was 14....

As an adult, I told my mom about a couple of those adventures when I was 11 to 14 years old, and she didn't believe me, mostly because she couldn't believe I did that many miles on my bike without her ever finding out.

Mostly agree with Pi Beta but in any case I could not remember for sure if he told me or not, as I was busy. Furthermore kids have more ability then adults give them credit for. So I will try to give the impression I was not worried at all!

The scenario doesn't tell me how far away he is, so I'm not right sure that this warrants punishment. I think I'll just join him in his fishing endeavors! No punishment this time!
