Ishmael's Enterprise
An Emlyn Production

It might be hard to discern in the picture but there is a thousands-years-old carving of a gazelle on a certain rock near Tazka, Morocco.

Local boys guide tourists to see the engraving for 10 dirhams.

Ishmael is too lazy to take the visitors up the long and difficult ascent to reach the carving, so he takes them to  his own version he carved on a rock near his home.

The tourists take photos and go away happily thinking they have seen the real thing!

How should Great Uncle Emlyn reward Ishmael's enterprise?

Well, in the fullness of time, Ishmael's drawing will be just as important. I'll give him a talking to. I think the boy has a good future fleecing gullible tourists.

I can see there will soon a herd of gazelles adorning the rocks, but for now good luck to the boy.

Ishmael has created a very believable fake, the boy clearly has an artistic bent, but 10 dirham, really? (ca. £1.5 or $2.5)

He is in dire need of a business manager.  I'm going to give him a sound spanking for undercharging and then we'll mount an expedition to "discover" some more prehistoric art.  Twisted Evil

PS. Its remarkable that the "original"  Has survived so well out in the open for thousands of years ............. Ishmael.......???

It's creative but it is a wilful deceit.

I agree with that and that while very enterprising I also agree with Skaters solution

I wonder how much of the "real" archeological objects were created just this way hundreds or thousands of years later then their attribution?!

Well, if the experts are right, there are many hundreds of well-surviving genuine examples of pre-historic rock engravings in Morocco.  Maybe, though, they were created to attract the pre-historic tourists!

In reality no-one seems to know who did the modern carving, nor when.

10 Moroccan dirhams is about 75p or a little more than one US Dollar, and that is a lot of money for a Moroccan boy.

The rock is quite difficult to find;  in reality a local boy showed me the way and would have been insulted if I had offered any money; in fact he invited me to Friday after-prayers couscous with his family.

But as for Ishmael, I'm going to whack him!

I was thinking of whaling on him for his deceit.  Razz

I'm along with those who think he needs a reason to quit sitting around. I have no idea about Moroccan tourist, but people around here don't take kindly to being played for patsies (though I doubt the law would do much more than turn him over to his parents).

I think the important point is that the boy has a real artistic talent. Maybe we can encourage him to develop that and sell the tourist paintings of gazelle in the rocks.
