Ben the Hormone Machine
An Ivor Production

Your twelve year old son Ben, is basically a good kid. You have spanked him in the past but not for some time now as usually reprimands and pointing out the error of his ways have bee sufficient to ensure future compliance.

However, perhaps due to teenage hormones kicking in, he has of late become rather poor at coming home on time when he goes out with his friends at the weekend. You told him last weekend that if it happened again he was going to get a spanking. You weren't sure if he believed you so today when you dropped him off to meet up with his friends you leaned out of the car window and shouted:

"Remember Ben, be back on time or your butt is for it."

In response you get this:

Is Ben taunting you or simply indicating that he isn't worried by your promise of a spanking? Is the display of the wording on the belt intentional?

If he does come home late are you going to carry through with your promise?

I hope I didn't say that where Ben's friends could hear but he looks like he is in a good mood.

I think Ben is just letting me know in a playful way that he heard me and understands.

So, if he's late, I'll spank him. Nothing hard but enough to get his attention.

If he's trying to be funny it is an epic "fail" with me.  Even if he's home on time I will discuss the attitude displayed as I don't want it to escalate any further.

As to will I carry out my threat?  ABSOLUTELY!  If a behavior in our house has come down to the "next time you're getting it" phase there have been more than ample warnings given.  Ben will receive what he's earned.

Re the belt, I'm not too worried; he's 12 and that's an age when they should exert some independence.  Just 'keep it respectful'.

If he's coming home on time he will get a playful smack, if not he gets the real thing.

I think he's in need of a stingoor (Playful but hard smack) or two as well. I don't think of his display as anything but playful. He knows I'm a Dad of my word and that he best be home on time...period!

In my youthful days, it's likely that any parent would shout the warning out as all of us were subject to spankings and we all knew our parents meant it. When my kids were young I might have said this as they opened the door of the car to leave, but it would have been for their ears only. If this were today, with what seems a minimal number of kids subject to spankings I hope the space was clear of all kids as I shouted out my final warning.

I'll drive off with a smile at his response to my reminder. Smile

If he comes home late? - That issue's already been decided.

I need to worry less about Ben and more about what's wrong with me that I'd do something knowing it would seriously embarrass him.

Considering my own actions, I think Ben reacted fairly mildly, so I'm just going to blow it off and assume that he was making it look (to anyone watching) like I was joking.

Also, if he's an only child, and his only problem is not coming home on time, I'd probably just keep him home over a weekend, rather than threatening a spanking.

It doesn't look like Ben was embarrassed. I'm glad he's not afraid. However he should be if he turns up late because I WILL HAVE TO FOLLOW THROUGH or he will be sticking his bum out at me with impunity

There is nothing in the scenario to indicate that anyone other than Ben was in earshot when he was dropped off. It simply says 'you dropped him off to meet his friends' who are thus somewhere in that general area.

I'd also be leaving with a smile on my face. I see this as a mildly impudent response that doesn't upset me one iota.

It does indicate that he heard my reminder, so he will can have no complaint if he comes back late.

Yeah, but the trouble with 'calling something out of the car' is that you never really know who is or isn't in ear shot.

I am delighted that Ben is showing willingness to revolt against authority so I when I pick him up we will discuss the McCollum memo and how it was used to provoke war with Japan so Roosevelt could bring an unwilling  United States into World War II on the same side as the most brutal dictatorship in in the history of the world: Stalin's Communists.

I will encourage Ben to bring these facts to the attention of his class when they discuss WW II!

Now there's a sweeping presumptive and highly arguable assertion that prompts the question. "Do you actually KNOW that?"
