SNOW DAY
A DMK Production

You have a fourteen year old son, Aaron.  You live in an area not used to snow and ice.  Yesterday evening a bout of winter weather passed through leaving everything coated in ice and a light accumulation of snow.  Schools are closed and Aaron has a snow day.  The school closure was announced yesterday evening and so you assume Aaron will enjoy his day off and sleep in.

You get up as usual and as you are headed out the door you see:

AARON - 14

Aaron says he felt it would be the right thing to do to clear the walkways and drives of the neighbors on either side of you so he got up early to take care of it.  Both neighbors are elderly and, despite the vast age difference, get along very well with Aaron and Aaron enjoys spending time with them and hearing their stories.  Aaron says he was concerned one of them may fall on the ice and be injured.  He further says since he had the shovel out that he decided to clear your drive and walk as well.  You ask Aaron about his lack of shirt since it is cold.  Aaron points to his shirt and hoodie draped over one of the shrubs and says he has worked so hard he is hot.

How do you address all of this with Aaron?

Simple.  I congratulate myself for having raised such a thoughtful helpful son, then I'll congratulate him in a similar vein.before I continue on my way.

His  feel-good factor is shining through and in this increasingly material world I will not demean him by attempting to give him a material reward.

No doubt the elderly neighbours will look to reward him in some way.  Whether or not he accepts is up to him.

This one and the rest as well. Good Boy Sunday has moved up to Great Boy Sunday.

I don't have much to add to the other replies. As to the lack of a shirt, Aaron is the best judge of what is comfortable.

I tell him thanks. I'll probably slip some extra money into his allowance last week as my thanks for his good work.

As for his having his shirt off... I know exactly how you feel, kid. I will suggest it's probably better to take a break and cool off than to strip, but with him being 14, if he doesn't go with that, I'll just suggest he be careful, instead of causing a fight.

AWWWWW!!!! What a terrific kid I've got; he's got the makings of a fine man; well done, indeed!

I agree with the concept of a "little something extra" in his allowance this week and I may caution him about taking a chill without the shirt in the cold, having worked up a sweat. Other than that, "carry on"!

Off subject: I remember the winter when I was 11 or 12 ('77 or '78 or maybe late '76), I'd been at John's house, and we were going to my house for something. It's just under a half mile, and we'd gone a couple of blocks. The street we were on had some streets that faced it, and some that were on side streets, so you saw the side of the house. We were passing one of those, when their back door opened, and a boy ran out in nothing but his jockey shorts. He ran across the yard, and I thought he picked up a dog bowl, but maybe he put one down. I wanted to wait to see if he came back, but John was cold (and wandering why I was that interested in a boy in his jockeys). Cute kid - looked a bit older than me, but not really more than maybe early teen.... I never did see a kid in that house again, so who knows?

Would you really take that off of him?

You know how easy it is to have those off the cuff comments misinterpreted
