What do You do?

You 12 year old son Adam is grounded for this weekend. You and he decided that grounding would be better than the usual spanking this time.

Adam is a good boy and only gets into mischief from time to time. Here is the problem, you boss at work has given you two free tickets to Adams favorite sports team for today.

How will you handle the situation? Turn down the tickets? Delay the grounding and take him? Something else?

I am going to talk to Adam. I assume he will want to go. If he doesn't want to go then the grounding stands and I don't take the tickets. If he does want to go then I think some sort of trade off will be fair since no where is it indicated that Adam is not handling being grounded well.

I am willing to trade off a mitigated spanking or I will allow him to make up the time and serve it next weekend.

There is also the possibility that I will release Adam with "time served." Would some bonding time with me not be important?

This is just 1 of the many reasons NOT to use grounding as punishment!

I think I will just forget the grounding and NOT TRY IT AGAIN!!

It's easy. We'll go. If I had bought the tickets in advance wouldn't I use them just because I felt l had to punish him?

A Icono said, why I dislike grounding and don't use it. I think that as long as the behavior in question wasn't TOO egregious I'll let him off with 'time served and we'll enjoy an afternoon of dad/son time.

Like everyone else, we'll go to the game if Adam wants to go. Depending on why he was being punished in the first place, he may get off with "time served", or deferral of punishment until next weekend.

Bit silly to waste the tickets so the grounding can be deferred as I presume attending such events is a rarity.

Of course we'll go. Adam has recognised and that accepted his misdeed deserved punishment. Now he can be learn that I'm not an unbending old fart.

Since it seems like we "negotiated" the grounding ( I'm a bit stuck not knowing what the boy did or how that discussion went) I will put it to him. I don't like the idea of deferring a grounding as the whole point is or it to be at best an inconvenience to the miscreant and also I think needs to be close to the time of the offence. So it will be spanking in lieu and we go the the game, one sitting rather uncomfortably! or the grounding stands.

Much may depend upon whether I enjoy watching the same sport as my son!

Yet another reason I hate grounding.

It would depend on a couple of things, but I think the best thing to do (going with the idea in the scenario that we both decided this would be best) would be to say no thank you to my boss, and not mention it to Adam at all.

Exception - if this is something really rare and special (box seats, play offs, or an exhibition), or something very expensive (like football tickets), I'll take him and we'll figure something else out about the punishment.

And this is probably the most honest answer. If he's a cricket fan, he's definitely staying grounded!

Count me in with the k club is what my heart says but really my first thought was what jack says....don't even say anything.

I'm sure I can get tickets if its just a regular game at a time when he is not grounded.

Twisted Evil  I could use this as a learning tool and let him know then explain that this is why I don't like grounding.

My check's in the mail for the Dave Club.

I will make it clear to Adam that this is a "one off" and is being considered only because of rare circumstances of free tickets and HIS favorite team.

Twisted Evil I think I'll go back to spanking him.  Razz

We're going if he wants to, and he can be grounded again when we get back. Assuming this is Saturday he can just be grounded tomorrow and call it even. If Sunday, then I think it'd depend on if he has school the next day and what time the game starts.
