A Stone man Production
The year is 1962. As a sixthgrader, Robbie is now able to be on an official school athletic team. Like most small schools in the state, his can’t afford to field a football team, so basketball is the first chance he has to participate in a school sport, which is good because basketball is his passion. Normally sixthgraders are only on a school’s “B” team, but Robbie is good enough to be a regular on the school’s “A” team.
Tonight, a Saturday, there’s a special evening game against an “Up County” team (six driving hours away), after which the opposing team’s boys will be staying with your and other home team families.
You finish up a job and arrive home early to find Robbie out by the basketball hoop practicing his foul and long shots. That comes as no surprise to you, but his lack of footwear does. Ordinarily you wouldn’t be upset with Robbie being barefooted shooting hoops, but two days ago a crew had demolished an unused and unsafe storage shed that had stood next to the hoop, and you hadn’t had time to properly police the area for leftover or missed nails, glass, and shards of wood or metal. You had made it clear to Roberson that it was ok to shoot baskets, but that he couldn’t go barefoot out there until you deemed it safe once again.
Robbie sees you and runs up to you expecting a hug, which he gets. When he steps back and sees you looking at his unshod feet he stammers out a series of “reasons” for the lack of footwear – He’d left his everyday shoes at school and worn his boots home on Friday; he could only wear his good new sneakers on the school or gym floors or in the house; his boots were too heavy to play in because their weight screwed up his jumping; and he REALLY needed to get more practice in before tonight’s game.
He looks up at you and can clearly see you aren’t buying any of this and offers a sincere apology and promises to not play there again until the grounds are safe… and asks if he’s in for a lickin’?
You assure him that he is and remind him that he was both forbidden to play there barefooted and that the area was dangerous so he’d be in for more than a simple spanking because of that.
This sets Robbie off on another session of pleading as he’s upset that EVERYONE at the game would know that he got a lickin’ and whippin’ because they’d be able to see the red on his legs. (Remember that it’s 1962 and that gym/athletic shorts were only large enough to conceal the color and style of the white briefs that all the boys wore.)
Robbie admits that he's earned a lickin’, but asks if you can PLEASE wait until tonight after the game…. At which point you remind him that there'll be a boy from the other team staying here for the night.
How do the two of you work this out?
