Benjamin’s Bad Dreams
A Kat Production

Your son Benjamin is just 8 years old. You do spank him, but rarely, as he is a well behaved and rather sensitive child. For the two nights, Ben has been having trouble sleeping. Tonight, you spend some time talking with him after he wakes up yet again in an attempt to figure out what is behind the nightmares. Finally he tells you that he stole a small toy from his the “prize store” his school runs during its annual fund raiser, which is a magazine drive. The kids earn points that they can redeem for junk in the store, and he didn’t have enough points for the toy he wanted. Now that you know the reason for the bad dreams, what will you do?

This one depends on a few things. What I would most prefer to do would be to talk him through it, and agree that we need to return it to the school, with him confessing how he got it, then taking whatever the school decides to give. The problem is, at least some schools with which I'm familiar would find 'theft (non-felony) worthy of ISS, not swats (one school handbook I saved says their district policy is 3 of each!).

With that in mind, I'm going to spank, and later we'll talk about how he should have handled this. I'm usually willing to give gift subscriptions for this kind of thing. Oh, I'm also taking the toy, but he can probably get it back in a while - we'll figure something out.

I think we settle this at home and as Ben appears to need to be punished to clear his conscience then a spanking is coming.

As the theft hasn't been noticed at the school I see no point in drawing it to their attention. If I do I'm sure it will get marked on Ben's record and follow him through his school years. What's the sense in doing that?

I 'm with Jack. Ben needs his conscience cleared and probably a hand spanking will do. We will deal with the school on the basis of what its policies are in this area and possibly make a donation to to the junk stock

I'm also with Jack on this.

I can remember interviewing a (probably 15 year old) boy in a school for careers advice. He seemed a thoroughly nice responsible lad and had good reports from his current school but in his folder I came across the report from his junior school advising the secondary one - "must have been a Goth or Vandal in his previous existence". It seemed so unfair that remained in his folder four years later.

I must admit that I was very tempted to ask him about his "previous existence" or even what he'd been up to in his primary school, but resisted the temptation.

I agree.
