A Blast from the Past – The Twenty Dollar Club – 1967
A Kat Production

(Inspired by an episode of Dragnet 1967)

Your wife had to pick up your fifteen-year-old son Jim from the police station, where he was detained after being caught shoplifting an odd assortment of merchandise from a department store.

The explanation eventually comes out that he had to steal $20 worth of stuff to be in a club. Your wife noticed that the clothing he was wearing was not anything she had purchased, and Jim admits that he also shoplifted his “mod” clothes so he could dress more like the others at his school. The police agree to release Jim to your wife, who assures the two detectives who called her that you will give Jim a whipping.

What sort of whipping, if any, can Jim expect from you?

Can you dig it?

Depends on where in the country.

Since the scenario says it was based on an episode of Los Angeles, that would be LA, and of my actual vintage (I'd have been a couple of years younger). My peer group got paddled or belted, and in "extreme cases" a razor strop--and being picked up from the police station after shoplifting would have qualified as "extreme" for anyone I knew.

If it were the South or Texas, he'd be picking a switch.

It'll be the belt and it won't be mod....est!

The first thing I'm doing is having a talk with Jim. Does he really want to join a club where he has to start by performing illegal acts? Why do they want him to do it, and where else does he think it will go? This is probably just a harmless stunt meant to show how daring he is, but it's the type of thing with a lot of bad potential.

I know I can't control his friendships, but I can spend some time giving him close supervision, so I hope he really thinks about this and has some good answers. Whether he does or not, he knows our family policies, and he knows where the switch tree is. I don't think he'll be worrying about those 'mod' clothes for a while.

"In the end, it's just a story. But if you ask me, it's all true."

I go with Jack on this one.

Jim is cutting a switch as we speak. Probabl not quite a stroke for every dollar but it has to be good to save Jim from his Mom!

I think the belt is the best choice.
