If you go down in the wood today..........
An Ivor Production

It is Saturday afternoon and your 7 year old son, Dylan, has gone missing. Neither you nor your spouse have seen him in the last couple of hours. He isn't supposed to go anywhere without telling you, but you call the homes of a couple of his friends who live in the same street and they haven't seen him.

You are not panicking as he does tend to be a solitary boy because he is several years younger than his two brothers who are 13 and 14.

Behind your house is some woodland to which there is a gate in your fence. On looking you find this to be open and questioning Mickey & Johnny both say that they haven't used the gate today. So, you go through the gate and into the woods and after a while you see:

When you ask Dylan what he thinks he is doing here he tells you that when he was in bed last night you sang that song to him, so he decided to take Teddy to the woods this afternoon and see if they could find a picnic for him. It seemed they were early so they decided to sit and wait for the others to arrive.

Are you simply glad to find him or will he be going to bed tonight  cuddling teddy for a different reason?

For those who may not be familiar with the referenced song:

A TEDDY BEAR'S PICNIC

If you go down in the woods today you're sure of a big surprise
If you go down in the woods today you'd better go in disguise
For every bear that ever there was will gather there for certain
Because today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic

Every Teddy Bear who's been good is sure of a treat today
There's lots of marvellous things to eat and wonderful games to play
Beneath the trees where nobody sees they'll hide and seek as long
as they please
That's the way the Teddy Bears have their picnic

Picnic time for Teddy Bears
The little Teddy Bears are having a lovely time today
Watch them, catch them unawares and see them picnic on their
holiday
See them gaily gad about
They love to play and shout
They never have any cares
At six o'clock their Mummies and Daddies will take them home to
bed
Because they're tired little Teddy Bears

If you go down in the woods today you better not go alone
It's lovely down in the woods today but safer to stay at home
For every bear that ever there was will gather there for certain
Because today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic

When did Dylan and I last have this conversation and am I sure he understands this rule?

If Dylan is aware he is not supposed to be there without permission then he can hold Teddy while he gets a sound spanking from my hand.

If Dylan is truly unaware that he has broken the rules then we will have a discussion about the issue.

Lost it to the ether.

Short version... no spanking, lots of discussion of rules and why, and how scared I was when I thought him lost.

I agree with Katz, who essentially agrees with Stoney. No spanking unless he has been clearly told of the rule about not going to the woods without permission. I wouldn't want him getting a big surprise....

I assumed everyone would know the song in question, but that could just be down to my age........

That excuse may have washed for my sophisticated 7yo GGS three years ago but today he just had a brainwave when he heard me coming.

"Good try Dylan but it's just as well you've brought spanky bear with you."

If you go down in the woods today you better not go alone
It's lovely down in the woods today but safer to stay at home
For every boy that ever there was will gather bare for certain
Because today's the day the Daddy Bears have their spanknic

In a case like this, I'd get him home first. After that amount of time, I'd probably be worried to death, and I could pounce on that rule, but I still remember being spanked 'because I should have known better.'

Dylan and I are having a long talk, covering being where he's supposed to be, how to expect when people will worry about him, and that songs don't always convey the exact truth.

Then perhaps the three of us can go in the backyard and have a picnic of our own.

Both

After I'v pointed out to Dylan how well=stocked with fresh switches the woods are I will tell him the dangers of what he did today and how worried we were and that I really am not buying his lovely little story, He can cuddle that enormous teddy bear after I paddle his little backside. I think we may stear clear of fairy tales after this, both of us

Ps I heard that sung countless times when I was little, It does stir memories
