SHIPWRECKED!
A Leti Production

A lake backs up to your property and you keep a small john boat tied to your pier.  Your thirteen year old son, Carson, is allowed to use the boat but there are a couple of rules.  Carson is required to tell a responsible adult if he is going to take the boat out and he is required to wear a life vest.

Today Carson is walking around by the lake and decides he wants to take the boat out.  Carson doesn't want to go back to the house to tell someone he is going out and to get his PFD. Carson unties the boat and gets in and starts rowing around the lake. Something goes wrong and Carson flips the boat and falls in the lake.  The boat sinks but Carson is able to swim back to the pier.  Carson has been out a while so you go looking for him.  You find Carson sitting on the pier looking very sad and scared.

You ask Carson what is wrong but he is initially silent.  Finally, after a bit of prodding, Carson tells you about the incident.  Carson then looks at you with sad eyes and asks, "Am I in trouble?"

Your answer?

"Yes" is the immediate response. However, I'm initially going to be more relieved that he is safe rather than worried about the boat. I'm going to get him home to have a warm shower and recover from the shock before deciding quite how much trouble he is in and what action I will take.

What has happened is probably a better learning experience than any punishment I can give him so, when I've calmed down and he's stopped shivering from both shock and cold or worry, we'll have a long talk about restitution rather than punishment - though restitution may well affect his pocket and or free time for the next few weeks.

I think Pi hit this one on the head for me. I do think I'll be adding a few paddle swats, but maybe not. He's had a huge scare, and dealing with that needs to be my main goal for now. We'll see how he reacts before making any other decisions.

After I get my heart started again, Carson is going to die because I am going to hug him to death. OMG, this could have been horrible! Instead of him sitting on the pier sad and scared I could have found him floating face down in the lake.

After that I will follow Pi's logic with Jack's caveat thrown in.

I agree that the scare is probably enough, and no physical punishment is needed. He needs reassurement and love rather than harshness. However, he will also get a talk about the reason for safety rules and lose some privileges (won't be allowed to use the boat on his own for a while, once it is replaced). He may also have some extra chores to "help pay for the boat", but that would depend on whether I think the sinking was due to (yet another) imprudence.

Carson is in for some enhanced level of spanking, and he knows it.

Yes, I'm thrilled to pieces that he's uninjured and safely on land, but that doesn't mitigate the wrongs that he has done. I will hug him to pieces to begin, but before much time has passed he will be loosing his trunks and be going over my lap.

Somehow we will likely get the boat back, it can't be that hard to find, but Carson won't be using it without me being with him for some time, that will be like another punishment, but he'll have to get used to it.

Tricky one this.  Carson's sitting there shaken from his experience and scared to come home to face the music.

On the face of this he deserves a severe hiding, but what would it teach him that he hasn't just learned in spades?

I'm conflicted, so relieved that he's safe and well yet furious that I'm going to have to go and hire a powered craft to salvage the upturned boat and (hopefully) the oars.

Carson is scared, he needs reassurance, reassurance that he is more important than the boat and any spanking I give him now will negate that reassurance and is likely to be tainted by an element of revenge for the trouble he's caused (and I don't do revenge).

He'll get a hug, a "Glad you are OK moment"  and a warm bath.  Then he can join me in the salvage operation.

Once the incident has been sorted we will have a talk.  Carson may be feeling guilty enough to need some sort of closure. --- We'll see.

I'm going to have a large PiMMs Smile

Or to put it another way, I'll go with the Pi & MM responses. He's had enough of a shock to have learnt his lesson ad I can't see that spanking him would achieve anything.

Now, had I just happened to have caught him out in the boat with his lifejacket then he would have got a spanking when he got back to land.

Stevie thinks he'll apprentice Carson to the Pirates of Penzance and all...

I'm in agreement with Pi, Daniel and MM. Carson has learned his lesson, and after his scare, piling on punishment would be cruel. Unless Carson somehow caused the boat to sink, I see no reason to make him pay for its replacement/repair.

How did I buy a low free-board boat without built in flotation so it could not sink?!

It's probably been an old family boat without any modern safety features.

I think I can't add much to the answers already given, but I'll probably be in no hurry to buy a new boat.

Just as long as his birthday is not February 29th. Razz

For your listening pleasure, these are the Pirate King and the "beautiful" Ruth explaining to young Frederic that due to an unfortunate circumstance he is not in fact 21 years old, but 5, and therefore still indentured to the pirates.

This may be a hug'em and spank'em moments. I want to see if Carson is more upset about getting spanked or being tipped out of the boat and having to swim for it I think I will stat with shower and hot drink and add swats unless Carson is showing signs of being in shock. The rules were there for this reason. If Carson had banged his head he could have gone down without a lifejacketand we might never have reached him
