COLE'S NIGHT TO COOK
A DMK Production

You have two sons.  Kyle is thirteen and Cole is twelve.  Once a month you assign each boy a night that it is their job to cook dinner from start to finish.  You do this so the boys can learn to cook and one day be self sufficient in this area if needed.  You don't expect gourmet you simply expect a meal and for the boys to learn some skills.

You have worked with the boys on the basic skills and on the use of the equipment.

Tonight is Cole's night to cook.

You come home from work and see Kyle in the kitchen:

You ask Kyle what he is doing.  He says, "I know it is Cole's night but he says he won't do it and I don't want to have to go without dinner tonight."

You notice what exactly it is that Cole is doing:

What happens?

Good job, Kyle. He can have Cole's share.

Cole can go to bed sore and hungry.

I first need to talk to Kyle.  I will thank him for stepping in but I need to reassure him he would never have to go hungry.  Either my SO or I would have cooked or we would have called for carryout or we would have gotten Cole on task.  I will let Kyle finish dinner.

I will then go and call for Cole.  I will let him explain himself.  He can't say he didn't know because Kyle reminded him.  Maybe Cole had a quick menu in mind and was just "messing with" Kyle?  Maybe Cole lost track of time?  I do suspect that Cole simply decided to blow off his responsibility knowing his brother would step in.

Unless Cole has a convincing argument then the bike will become my property for the next week and when Kyle's turn to cook comes around Cole will be taking that for him.

Razz  I might need more practice with Kyle on portion management.  How big is my family that we need eleven servings of meat?  Razz

I will grill him first, but on the face of things it seems to me that Cole's goose is cooked and his rump is about to get roasted. Whether that be medium or well done depends on his 'tude.

I think that bike is about to become a less comforting ride for Cole. I will let him explain himself then may be clean off the wooden spoon if Kyle can manage without, though if there is a nice bread board with a handle.. Nothing like an object lesson. One thing though Why did Kyle find hunger such a motivating factor when Cole didn't.  Cole does Kyles next turn on the roster

First, I only have Kyle's report of what Cole said, so I'm not going to act on that directly. Second, part of my actions depend on how I generally handle one of the boys not doing their chores.

What I will do is have a talk with Cole about why his brother is the one cooking. If his story comes up anything like Kyle said, then Cole will be told he can cook a couple of meals in the next week, to make up for missing tonight. I will explain to him why I have him doing this, and I will offer to help him get things organized and planned, but I will also promise him a thorough spanking if this happens again or if I have an argumentative attitude from him.

Kyle needs some kind of treat for stepping up.

I never do any cooking. I just don't like it.

Anyway, I'm going to whack them.

Will the oven be coal fired, with a couple of hot plates on top?

Those boxers are coming off and when I'm done his "well done butt" will not want to ride his bike.
