Last fall, you let your son talk you into taking him to a movie that was opening on a school night (you can read all the details in Rusty's Tangled Web

Rusty - now 12

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

There's another huge movie opening this week, and the 'sneak preview' starts at 7pm on Thursday night.

"Please, Dad," he begs you.  "All the kids are going.  PLEASE!"

"Rusty, I told you after what happened last time, that you weren't going to a movie on a school night again."

"But Dad, I did all my homework.  Look," he adds, holding a folder out to you.

"This isn't about what you're doing, but about what I told you would happen, Rusty."

Actually, you'd planned on busting his butt for the layers of lying he'd laid on, but your partner convinced you that this would make a better impression.  On the other hand, Rusty really is a good student, and that's the only problem you've had with him (related to school, at least) all year.

He's nearly in tears now.  Will you stick to his guns?  Has he learned his lesson?  Or is it time for the spanking you'd thought about giving him six months ago?

I think enough time has passed and he has shown the homework is done. I can't see for a child this age enforcing a punishment almost a year after the "crime."

We will go to the movie.

Rusty has certainly learnt a lot in the last year.  He's done his homework and the movie is early so he can get to bed before 10 unless we're hours from the cinema.  At the most he'll miss an hours sleep.

He'll be happy.  I'll be happy getting quality time with him.  Let's order the tixs now to avoid a sell out and disappointment.

One thing is that he should have spoken of this a couple of nights ago to make sure of transportation and more.

"All work and no play make Jack a dull boy!"

I find myself in TOTAL agreement with Y Lee!! Rusty has learned from his past errors and I really shouldn't be a 'nag' and bring up his past misdeeds. He can easily afford the loss of an hour's worth of sleep and we'll have a good time together.

Perhaps this is a means to establish a better record of conduct going forth.

Lost the post ... dang!

Rusty was spanked for his lying last year according to most/many/ of the posts. It's time to close the book on that.

Rusty is a year older, and wiser, and has shown me his completed work. Time to go to the movies and enjoy some time with my son.

Speaking as someone who used to be taken fairly regularly by his parents to see movies in the evening, I don't see a problem. I was almost certainly a coupe of years older, but it appears this is very much a 'one off' for Rusty, so I see no problem about us going.

I don't see this as a punishment. I see it as 'we tried it, it didn't work, so we're not going to do it again for a while.'

Having said that, I think I'll sit down with Rusty, remind him of why we have this rule, and see what he's learned since last fall. If he has already done his homework, and since he has been keeping his grades up, I think I'd be willing to give him another chance.

I agree with everyone else. He's shown himself to be responsible. A lot of time has passed. It's time for another try.

A little bit over a tenth of lifetime is a lot of time for the boy to learn from his errors, and he obviously did.

IF Rusty really has done his workt his tme then the paddling he got last ear worked and he'snot tried to deceive me this time. Providing the movie doesnt finish so late that Rusty will struggle rise and shine tomorrow I think we can go
