This is Kevin.

Kevin is 15, and is close friends with your son, David, who's in high school. The two of them have been friends for years, and you and Kevin's father treat each others kids like they were your own.

Kevin hangs around your house a lot during the summer. The only problem is, he never remembers a swim suit, so ends up swimming in his clothes. That wouldn't be a problem, except he likes cut off jeans. You've asked him numerous times not to swim in them, because the threads can get lose and jam the filter.

You just got home, and Kevin was coming out of the pool.

What happens to Kevin? David knows Kevin isn't supposed to be swimming in those: Is he in trouble as well?

Well, I'm not spanking anyone over it.

It depends on how casual the household is.  If it's the sort where skin is not a big deal, Kevin can swim au natural or borrow a suit from Dave.  Failing that, he can be prohibited from the pool until he goes home (or comes next time) with a suit.  I will remind him, again, that swimming in cut-offs is bad for the pool filter, and let him know that if it breaks, after a conversation with his dad, any repairs will be coming out of his allowance.

David is not in trouble, though he'll hear the same lecture about jammed filters.

I will let Kevin rummage through some of David's older suits to see if there is one he can use. If not I will send him home to get his and suggest he leave it at my house. Alternatively, I have no problem buying Kevin a suit and leaving it at my house for his use.

Beyond that addition I will give a ditto to Kier's response.

Endorse everybody's advice so far. As for the threads? from the cutoffs? there are more that would come from his hair. Well, so be it. No bad outcome for him.

If he can't respect my dress code then he doesn't deserve to be allowed my pool.

I definitely don't see why if he can't be bothered to remember to bring a swimsuit with him I should buy one that he can keep here.

He's 15. Does he forget to take his books to school or his phone when he goes out? I bet not.

Sorry Kevin but from now on no swimsuit = no pool. And if that rule gets broken you not only get a swim but a paddle too.

I'd never thought about that before. The threads from cutoffs are a LOT thicker than hair, though, so I would assume that's the reason there's a problem.

Count me in the K Club. Think I might discuss with Kevins Mom and see if a little teen embarrassment does the trick. If th filters are clogged I will be sure toshow Kevin the results

If this household is anything like mine, I think I'll have them both get out of the pool and out of their shorts. Then I'll send David for the paddle. I'll chew Kevin out a bit while Dave is gone, and remind him of how many times he's been reminded. Once I have the paddle in my hands, I'll suggest that he skinnydip if he can't remember his trunks...

"Or should I go ahead and paddle you now?"

I mostly wrote this one to use that picture. The truth, however, is that I have a lot of kids who end up either leaving a bunch of clothes over here, or taking a lot of stuff home. If it was just two kids, I could probably do a better job of keeping track, but ....

I have thought about this again long and hard. I have decided:

Why would I want to discourage that boy from wearing those shorts? Embarassed

I'll clean the filter. Twisted Evil

I didn't think any self respecting teenager would wear something like these shorts any more... Shocked
