HAYRIDE HI-JINKS
A DMK (Memory Man - Autumn Parade Inspired) Production

You have an eleven year old son, Kyle, and a younger seven year old daughter, Princess. Kyle likes to play practical jokes that sometimes get out of hand. You have warned him before to think before pulling a joke.

A group from your church is hosting a fall hayride for the kids and Kyle and Princess attend and you are invited along as a chaperone. There will be a stop for lunch halfway through the hayride and so everyone is supposed to bring a sack lunch and a drink for the lunch stop. Kyle thinks it will be a funny joke to hide his sister's lunch down in the bales of hay. No one sees him stash Princess's lunch.

The group stops for lunch and everyone begins eating, except Princess. She is frantic about not being able to find her lunch. Finally Kyle comes clean about his joke and fishes his sister's lunch out of the hay. To his and everyone's dismay, the lunch is ruined. The bag is crushed and everything is now open and smashed and dirty. The bottle of water even popped open and spilled out. Princess' lunch is inedible.

You do use spanking with Kyle. Is this a time for a spanking? There is a secluded wooded area close by.

To everyone's dismay the lunch is ruined and inedible. Assuming that Kyle is included in everyone, this was an unintended consequence. If people were always punished for unintended consequences, the entire US Congress would be in a perpetual state of punishment. On the other hand, it is said that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions....

At any rate, switching or otherwise chastising Kyle isn't going to get his sister an edible lunch. He's going to get an earful--but if he is as dismayed as the scenario indicates, he's going to be in tears before my first sharp remarks Assuming that's the case: "Now you see why practical jokes are a really bad idea" will be sufficient. If he isn't remorseful, I'll up the ante, but otherwise, I'm not spanking him.

Between Kyle and I we'll replace Princess' lunch with part of our own. Kyle will not get spanked, since I know he did not intend to be destructive, but I will have a serious talk with him. He will have to show more restraint and better judgment with his practical jokes or he'll find himself bare bottomed over my knee.

Kyle is now sharing his lunch assuming he hasn't already eaten it.

I really wouldn't have eaten before one of my kids had even started, but if so we would find another solution. There must be somewhere I can buy food and water, or some other adults that can help.

Kyle, and I , will be sharing our lunch with the girl, On this occasion I think Kyles rumbling front will speaker louder to him than a sore behind. A true natural consequence

Kier and Daniel seem to be saying essentially the same thing. I agree with them: no spanking, and let's focus on fixing the problem.

Ah, yes! The hay harvest - bare chested men toting them bales in cool autumn sunshine. Us boys would help or hinder. Later cheese and cider under the harvest moon. When did it all go grey? Sad

Anyway, as for Kyle - I'm going to whack him!

Since the scenario says 'to his... dismay', he's going to get let off easy this (one last) time. I would certainly not spank him now, woods or no. At 11, he has enough memory to wait until we get home.

What I may do, depending on how much joking he's had in his past, and how many talks we've had about it, is get him ready for a spanking, fetch the deluxe instrument, then tell him 'I'm just joking - isn't it funny?' On the other hand, now that he sees how unexpected consequences work, maybe that won't be necessary.

I am tempted to make him give his sister his entire lunch, which would certainly be fair, but I guess I'm just a push over, so I'll agree with pretty much everyone else.

Very Happy I bet your boys love your "gallows humor".

There is an old proverb about making hay while the sun shines which could perhaps be adapted to 'while the moons shine'?

Perhaps not though.........

You betcha!

Honestly though, I don't see this so much as gallows humor as simply helping him see that, what one person considers funny might not be funny to other people.
