Putting His Foot In It!
An Ivor Production

Over the last few month your 14 year old son Callum has developed a habit of which you do not approve - putting his trainer/shoe clad feet on chairs. You have tried hard to dissuade him from doing this and have even threatened to spank him (you actually use a paddle) if you catch him doing so.

Has the foot on the table clinched his fate?

Clear the throat, watch him almost fall tell him that is why we don't put feet on furniture. Give him some reminder swats and be on our way.

Looks like some sort of outdoor table anyway. Hardly the crime of the century so I think a stern reminder about his feet will get his attention.

Now, as to him going to Starbucks and not even asking me if I wanted anything . . . . Twisted Evil

I'm sure I'm more concerned about upholstered furniture than this sort of wooden table. As long as it's not furniture that he can damage with dirty shoes, I won't make an issue of it.

It really depends on the circumstances.  In general, I tend to agree with Skater - if I feel strongly enough to make a real, then I need to enforce the rule.  On the other hand, I'll probably offer him a chance to explain to me why he doesn't deserve a couple of swats.

.... Or, maybe this is a good time to introduce him to bastinado.

I don't often make threats, but when I do I follow up.

I think though that this time the paddle can just lie in readiness awaiting a more clear cut issue.

Next time he will find himself leaning over that table rather than resting his feet on it. The paddle might rest there too as MM suggests

I think I'll use remove his footwear from his feet and apply to his seat. Not excessively hard since I don't think he's really doing much damage to what his feet are resting on, but it will be a useful reminder of the upgraded paddling he can expect when his footwear next rest on anything more expensive.
