A Padraig Production

You are a single parent of a 10 (soon 11) year old boy. His name is Toby. He's always been a great kid and almost never in trouble worse than what can sorted out with some burning ears. You even trust him to stay alone for a couple of hours after school when you have to work late (which is the case quite often lately). But you recently discovered that he tries very hard to impress you though there is really no reason for that.

Though you aren't that well off you can afford to spend some money on Toby and he got a guitar set for his birthday. He started quite well but you haven't heard much of it because he likes spending time with you more than practising guitar when you are home.

You manged to get off earlier today and when you opened the door you heard a guitar version of your favorite song of B. King. When you pass the living room you see this:

Toby - 10

You stood there enthralled. After he finished you start clapping your hands. Toby's head shot up, he went pale and he broke into tears. Without a word he stormed upstairs into his room. Of course you followed him and found him on his bed, bawling his eyes out. He refuses to tell you what is wrong.

1. Why is Toby so upset?
2. What will you do?

Let's see:

I haven't had a chance to do laundry and so he is stuck wearing his tiger print pajamas which he hates.

No, that's just silly.

Hmmm . . .

He is supposed to be doing homework and chores and he knows I am going to paddle him hard for taking time to play around with his guitar before chores and homework are done.

No, that's too mean.

What about . . .

He is a perfectionist and feels like he did a bad job.

No, I don't like that either.

I got it!

He has been practicing the piece to play at my surprise birthday party next weekend and now he is afraid the surprise is ruined.

I will hug him tight and let him cry it out then I will remind him I love him. I will tell him I already knew about the party because his crazy aunt Agnes can't keep her mouth shut. If he wants to talk more then I will be available.

My guess is that he was planning to surprise me with it on Christmas morning (or my birthday if earlier).

Obviously, I'll go and talk with him and try to get to the bottom of the problem. (There is no way that he'll be in any trouble - so not that bottom!) I'm sure when he eventually stops crying in my arms, he'll confirm my suspicion and we can move forward. He's clearly a Daddy's boy.

Looks like great minds think alike on this one...

"In the end, it's just a story. But if you ask me, it's all true."

I don't have a better idea than that either. What a talented little boy, and I love the jammies.

The Cappadocian

Toby is upset because he knows I don't tolerate that pentatonic nonsense in my house. While I'm impressed with his technique, he's supposed to be practicing his modes and his sweeps and he knows he's in big trouble for playing that bluesy foolishness within my hearing. My son must SHRED! (obviously I'm joking, but this was the first thing that came to mind and I couldn't resist)

Can't offer anything more creative than what we've already got.

I'll hug him and try to comfort him as I tell him what an amazing and wonderful surprise I've had TODAY

Methinks young Toby has slipped up. Surely he should be playing this?

I'm going to ditto MM......

Hugs kal

Blowed if I know. Its me who should be in tears after that. What talent. Did he skip school. The christmas surprise blown is a good thought

Of course what I had in mind was exactly what you guys thought.

The real Toby of course is a musical prodigy. He started playing an ukulele at the age of 4 and switched to guitar at 6.

Check his youtube channel, if you like.
