This is your 10-year old son, Zack.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Zack doesn't look so happy right now, as you pick him up from the mall.

Zack was very happy earlier in the day, because he was going to do some Christmas shopping with his very own money. He'd been saving, and he was going to buy for gifts.

Now he's been kicked out of one of the stores, the two of you are on your way home, and you're not very happy with him.

After buying three of his four presents (for you, his best friend, and his little brother), he saw a perfect gift for his mom - much better than what he'd planned to get here. The problem was that it was just too expensive. He decided the easiest way to solve that problem was to change boxes, which he did. He had trouble getting the boxes opened though, and ended up damaging the product inside the box lower priced box. He was caught trying to repair the problem, and you were called.

The store isn't pressing charges, nor did they require you to buy the merchandise, but they did invite Zack to leave.

What happens now?

I feel sorry for him because of how eager he was, but what he did was plain wrong. Gently, I'm going to explain that to him, and then he'll get a standard spanking and lots of reassurance so that we can go on with our day.

At ten it might seem as the best solution but it's now my task to teach him he was wrong.

Explanation time, not spanking time, I think.

Question I left a ten year old alone at the mall at Christmas? OK, guess I did.

We need to have a talk about why this was wrong and how he could have handled it differently. (Asking to do extra chores or for an allowance advance, etc.)

Then there will be a spanking to reinforce that this is stealing and wrong.

An opportunity will then be made for him to earn the money and then we are back to the mall. (If the store won't let me escort him then I will need to make the purchase.)

I'll go with DB. It was wrong even if done with good intentions and that he needs to understand. As the store seems to have let him off lightly he definitely going to get a spanking from me to drive the message home.

I'll also need to explain to him that his Mom would have been thrilled with whatever gift he had got as it had been bought with money he had saved.

You were on a bench out front, giving him privacy for his Christmas shopping - maybe you took him after school when it wasn't too busy...

I go with DMK. There has to be some punishment. Ivor is also correct that Mom would have been pleased with anything and certainly wouldn't want her son in trouble with the law for a christmas present. It is a teaching moment too

I'm going along with Daniel. A lot of understanding and support are going to be necessary if this Christmas isn't to be spoiled. The most important thing is that Zach understand why attempting to switch the boxes was wrong. I think this is a time when punishment is necessary, but it is secondary to Zach's understanding that what he did was equivalent to theft. And like Ivor, I want to make sure he understands that the value of a gift isn't in what it costs.

I actually had to deal with a similar issue to this once. It was Van and... Del, I think.

You have to understand that one of our local convenience stores, 7-11, charges you for cups. It doesn't matter what's in the cup, they charge you for the cup. So, when the two boys had been out, and got hot and thirsty, they decided to get a fountain drink, but drink it in the store, instead of taking the cup with them.

At that time, I assumed that they knew what they had done wasn't right, but I believed them that they didn't realize it was theft. On the other hand, what they (and Zack) have done is deceitful at best, and it can't just be dismissed. On the other hand, Zack was trying to do something nice, and he needs to be recognized for that, along with punished for the way he did it.
