You have two boys, Matt who is 12 and Mitch who is 9. Mitch and Matt both got Nerf guns for Christmas and Mitch even has a nice vest to hold extra ammo.

You set the rules for the guns that they can play in the basement, or their rooms. (Where there is less of a chance something gets broken or someone gets hurt.) You come home to your SO fuming.

It appears that the boys had a Nerf war in the living room and knocked a few ornaments off the Christmas tree which hasn't been taken down yet. She holds out Matt's "baby's first Christmas" ornament and, sure enough, it is slightly cracked from hitting the floor. The boys are spanked as needed.

What do you do?

Can you dig it?

John Boy

I'm going to have to see if I can get his ornament fixed. I will then give the boys the option of seeing their nerf guns being locked away for the foreseeable future. Or I take them for the day and spank them for disobedience.

With boys of 9 and 12, I probably should switch to shatterproof ornaments and put anything too special to be broken away or find a way to display it that minimizes the chances of damage. The boys did disobey, but I doubt it was deliberate -- just enthusiasm for playing with their toys. I think I'll take the nerf guns for the rest of today so they get the message to be more careful.

I agree with Kat.

It is a clear case of disobedience -both boys should get the hair brush

I don't see 'knocking a few ornaments off the Christmas tree' as being crime of the century.

I'm joining the K Club.

With boys this age (these ages?), I only see it as clear or direct disobedience when you tell them to do something and they turn around and don't do it. In this case, where it sounds like at least a few days have passed, I tend to think it's more forgetfulness or impulsiveness.

Unless this kind of behavior is frequent with them, then I'm with Kat.

"In the end, it's just a story. But if you ask me, it's all true."

I m with Kat but with added stingoers. They did disobey and it still being Christmas and the toys new saves them worse

I'm with Kat and square......

I think about it and realize that Nerf guns are not really suitable gifts for a 9 and 12 year old boys! So I take both boys to my local gun shop and buy Mitch a Ruger 10/22 rifle and an adjustable stock for it. For Matt I buy an AR15 clone, with an adjustable stock already installed. I also buy scopes for both rifles. Of coarse these are not toys so I also buy laser guns for practice to go with the Nerf guns they already have.

I like Icono's idea, but I can just hear the screams in today's world!!

By the time I was 8-9, I had my own bb gun and had stomped the woods hunting with Grandpa, Tatu and Didu.  Back in the day, up here when a boy turned 12, he took the hunter's safety course and could legally carry a rifle in the woods with an adult-it was quite the rite of passage for us.

That was the summer Tatu was killed and even with the move to the farm and all of that insanity, I still got to carry a real, live G-U-N into the woods that year.  We learned a lot about responsibility and respect for what we were doing.  This carried on for me even to the farming world.  I understood that we were taking a life in order to eat and to respect that.

As to these 2 however....they get their ears chewed off, and the Nerf guns are confiscated to for a period to be determined.  I hope the ornament can be either repaired or have the crack placed in a somewhat inconspicuous spot and I'll TRY to calm the SO down to the more rational level.
