A Blast from the Past – 1977 – Shaken, Not Stirred
A Kat Production

As a weekly treat, your fifth grade class (age 10) is allowed to bring money to school to buy a soft drink from the vending machine. You’ve asked kids repeatedly to be careful not to make a mess. Today you see Gilbert deliberately shaking his can of Dr. Pepper before opening it. It makes a huge mess in the classroom.

Is Gilbert in trouble?

In trouble?  Not at all.

In fact he has earned himself a special treat -- a practical lesson in clean up with a mop and bucket while the rest of the class watches with envy.

I agree. He cleans up the mess. If that means he misses recess or has to stay after school then so be it.

considering it is a blast from the past I think he might have the practical lesson after talking it over with the principal.

I would cancel the pop day for the rest of the year and announce to the entire fifth grade exactly who was responsible for the decision to do this...

And remind them on every pop day for the rest of the year, too...

Based on the era I think Gilbert will be finding the each of his shorts legs being pulled up in turn in order that I can administer a couple of firm slaps to each. That will act as a visible reminder to the rest of the class not to perform the can can.

Then he can clean up the mess.

I'm a little torn on this. My strict side says he made the mess on purpose, and he deserves a couple of swats. I should also point out that, if pop day gets cancelled because of this, all his friends will blame him.

My more lenient side says he already lost his pop and had to clean his mess, and that's good enough.

I think the final answer will rely upon how he reacts and his previous record.

Most of y'all are more lenient than my fifth grade teacher (and a couple are stricter). I had to write lines. Very Happy

What I really had in mind was for Gilbert to fetch the janitor (custodian) to come deal with the mess by making the boy do the work to his 'professional' standards.  Missing recess would be a bonus.  Writing lines is basically wasting time and resources in a pointless task which can only bring resentment.

Getting a couple of pops from whatever or seeing the head/principal for a lecture would give some measure of status which is not desirable.  Having to do clean up would be negative yet productive.

Stevie's collective punishment suggestion is beyond the pale and is not worth future comment.

Back in those days there were sweets called Refreshers that if dropped in A bottle of coke would fizzle and dissolve and produce the same result in spectacular fashion without the effort. I want to know why Gilbert did it. He can miss recess and help the janitor clear it up . A repetition will bring a paddling which could be painful if he always wears such short shorts
