BRIDGE OUT
A DMK Production

There is an old bridge in your community that has been deemed unsafe.  The bridge was closed to traffic.  Due to the fact that there is no vehicle traffic on the bridge a lot of the local kids like to play on it.  The local authorities have been cracking down to keep everyone off of the bridge until it can be repaired or demolished and replaced.  You have specifically told your eleven year old son, Emmanuel (Manny) to not play on the bridge.

Manny is out riding his bike when a sheriff's deputy brings Manny and his bike to you.  You are told that Manny was found riding his bike on the bridge.  Manny is released to you with no charges.

Manny's defense is that everyone is overreacting.  he says it is no big deal.  Manny says the bridge might not be safe for cars but it will hold a kid and a bike with no problems.

What happens to Emmanuel?

Confiscate his bike and all his toys, then send him to one of those US Military academies that believe in severe corporal punishment.

Manny is correct, everyone IS overreacting! Any bridge still standing is safe for a kid on a bike, even if not for cars and trucks! This will be a good lesson for him that bureaucrats are NOT his friend or possessed of useful intelligence. Of coarse there will be no punishment!

While the bridge MAY be safe for a kid and a bike, it is still a safety violation, and it's illegal as well. He's getting a spanking, and losing the use of his bike for a week.

I agree with Kier.

Without knowing more specifically the details of why the bridge has been closed, I'm inclined to take Icono's stance on this one.

I will try to stop him not going there, but if it is that much of a danger the authorities need to do more to prevent the kids getting on it.

Ditto Ivor & Icono.

If the bridge is really that unsafe, ie unsafe for pedestrians (& kids on bikes) it should be adequately guarded.

Perhaps I should sue the authorities for failing in their duty of care. Idea

There are many reasons that a bridge may be unsafe and we can not second guess the qualified civil engineers that we pay to make these determinations.  Yes, the loading of a mess of bikes nowhere approaches that of couple of cars bouncing across but are the railings secure? Is everything secure above (and below) or could a stiff breeze or heavy bird knock something down?

Shall I remind you of the straw and the camel's back?

Manny is definitely in trouble.  We are going to have a talk -- illustrated -- https://www.google.com/search?q=bridge+collapse&num=100&newwindow=1&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwin857G47rKAhVG2R4KHZMLDgkQ_AUICSgD&biw=1366&bih=607 and some video such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-zczJXSxnw of "Gallopin' Gertie"

Perhaps a book report for "The Bridge of San Luis Rey" by Thornton Wilder about the failure a bridge with just people on it rather than bikes.

Oh, and going on closed, dangerous bridges is sure to be painful in the end.

I imagine the bridge has some sort of barrier to indicate it's closed. In my experience, it's not difficult for a pedestrian or bicycle to go around such barriers.

And at 11 you, Manny, are the fount of all knowledge and wisdom. You are of course, also immortal.
The authorities have said no. I have said no. Safe or not, you disobeyed me, got brought home by the police and are getting a sore behind.

This is not a question of how safe the bridge is (though I'm almost positive he's not a qualified civil engineer, able to determine if it is or not). To me, the really important thing is that he directly disobeyed me, and his disobedience was a safety violation. At 11, I'm pretty sure a deluxe session with the Tailblazer will remind him that neither of those are good ideas. When he feels about to sit on his bike again, we'll discuss if/when he has permission to ride it.

If the bridge is genuinely dangerous, I would have expected the authorities to have erected barriers that now, I presume, either children or adults have chosen to bypass/destroy. If that is the case, Manny will get a deluxe spanking since those barriers, even destroyed, are a clear reminder of the closure.

If the bridge had not been totally blocked off by the authorities at some time, Manny is still violating my instructions but his spanking will not be a deluxe one.
