DANNY AND JACK
A Kalico Production

DANNY - 14
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

You and your 14 year old son, Danny, are very close as you are a single parent and its only the two of you. You are somewhat surprised when Danny comes to you and asks if he could take your half bottle of Jack Daniel's to his friend's birthday sleep over for his friends to try. You, of course, tell the boy NO and you explain why. You have on occasion let you son have a taste of your Jack and Coke or a beer and you have talked to your son about only doing that at home with you and why. You tell Danny if he is caught drinking anything alcoholic outside of your home he will get a tanning.

You think nothing of it come Friday evening and you drop Danny off at the sleep over. Later that evening you get a call from a VERY upset father asking you to come get your son. Evidently he and the rest of the boys that stayed over all brought something alcoholic and a few of the boys got sick (nothing too serious.)

Is Danny gonna get the tanning you promised or is he in for something more?

I will get him to bed and let him sleep it off and, in the morning, he can have a hearty serving of toast.

I will listen to what he has to say. He'd better HOPE he can convince me that he didn't take anything. If he can't, he's going to be in for a hard time - probably starting a day in seclusion with a sore butt.

After reading Jack's response, I realize I automatically assumed Danny was guilty. Of course he may be showing obvious symptoms but, if not, he can have a chance to prove he wasn't one of the drinkers and I will check my stash.

If he is innocent then good, if not, then the toaster is ready.

I want/need a whole lot more information before deciding what to do. Did Danny get and bring something alcoholic? Did he drink or just watch the others drink? I'll note that he was not one of the sick ones so he apparently did resist peer pressure.

If he is sober, then we have a talk to determine the facts. If not, then the talk is tomorrow. It likely that there are long term consequences for illegal behavior.

Probably I might think different as an (active) parent but in my professional experience what discribed is just a normal and minor occurence. Crying or Very sad

I really do need clarification from Danny as to whether he was a 'bringer', drinker, both of those or simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Guilty until proved innocent or innocent until proved guilty:?:

My biggest concern in an incident like this would be my own criminal liability. As it appears Danny and several others brought the alcohol, I doubt any of the parents will involve the police. My real feeling aligns with Padraig's post; however, I'm going to make clear to Danny not only what is at stake but also that he has violated my trust. I think the best way to achieve this is by purchasing a locked liquor cabinet. He can forfeit two week's allowance to go towards that purchase as a symbolic punishment. The real punishment is a clear message that I don't trust him. He will have to earn that back. Any other punishment is going to depend on the reactions of the other parents. It's not in Danny's interest either to get off lightly compared to the others or receive an unduly harsh punishment.

I do allow my kids to drink at home. My real problem with this scenario (or rather, the boy in it) is that it appears that, after Danny had asked me, and I explained the reasons it couldn't happen, he did it anyway. However, that's why I want to talk to him before I make any decisions about what's to be done. If he did take liquor, my real problem is him disobeying me and breaking my trust (which I think could be easily put down to peer pressure in this situation, since it sounds like an organized thing). To me, the actual drinking is a minor thing, though he needs to understand that he risks getting us both in some expensive trouble when he does something like this.

Did Danny take alcohol to the bash. If so that's a spanking for disobedience. Did he drink alcohol, if so that's a serious spanking whatever state of inebriation or otherwise he was in when the host Father called.

I don't think I've tried Jack Daniel's.  Is it anything like Old Grand-Dad?  I used to like that.  But I don't touch spirits now.

I had a cousin who tried Southern Comfort when it first reached Pantyffynnon.  He was so impressed he bought shares in the company.

Anyway, I'm going to whack that boy!

After the clarification its a good session bare with the strap followed by a grounding backed by the threat of a repeat session if he breaks it. Mad

Old Granddad is Jack's father's father, I think.
