A Blast from the Past – 1972 – But What About Me?
A Kat Production

You are the sole parent of four sons. The oldest, Michael, is thirteen; the twins, Homer and Virgil, are eleven; the baby of the family, Arthur, is seven. You tell Michael, Homer and Virgil to keep an eye on Arthur for a few hours while you admit your mother to the hospital.  You instruct them to stay at home in case you need to contact them. You come home early to find the boys missing. Though they only walked to a neighborhood store to buy candy, you are stressed about your mom and annoyed they disobeyed. You tell the older boys you’re going to spank them and order Michael to get the hairbrush you use for this purpose. A tearful Arthur asks, “But what about me?” It turns out the boys took a vote and everyone, including Arthur, voted to go to the store.

Yes. - but age appropriate & hand rather than brush.

He has admitted playing his part in the joint decision to go and it will a light spanking for the sake of cementing brotherhood since he would have to mind his minders anyway.

The boys only walked to the nearby store, taking Arthur so they could continue watching him. I can see no real problem with that, so I will forget the punishment.

Just because I am stressed is no reason to be unreasonable!

Admirable from young Arthur so he can go over my knee first but I agree with MM. He is too young for the brush. Hand will do as I am sure his brothers will agree

I actually agree with Icono. Assuming the older boys can normally walk to the store (and in 1972, I'm sure they could), and that Arthur is in their care, I'm going to take Arthur's tearful request as an opportunity to step back, take a deep breath, and recognize that I was about to deliver a spanking because I'm stressed rather than because it was deserved.

Yes, Icono and Kier say it well.

I hope I'd end up in Icono and Kier's camp, but fear that if I am that stressed I could well end up sharing a tent with MM!

I would like to be like Icono if it was truly due to stress but it was said that "I had told the boys to stay home incase I needed to get ahold of them" and I don't think that that was very unreasonable so young Arthur can also get a spanking right along with his big brothers.... Just hand should be enough

Fly on the Wall Report.

"I'm going for some candy"
"Dad say's we can't go out while he's taking Gran to hospital in case he needs us quickly"
"The shop's only down the street"
"I want candy too"
"So do I"
"Dad said No"
"We'll only be gone a minute"
"We'll get the brush if he finds out"
"Wuss"
"I'm not!  Anyway how many want to go and get something?"
"That's everybody.  Let's run."

And I'm still gonna' whack 'em.

I imagine it would happen a lot like that.

I don't think asking the boys to stay at home was unreasonable in this situation. In the era before answering machines, let alone cell phones, people often were stuck at home waiting for phone calls. I think the parent was uncertain how much time they would need to spend at the hospital and wanted to ensure they could get a message to the kids. It might have become necessary to ask another adult to step in and provide a meal or even stay over night. Looking after themselves for a few hours is one thing, but there are limits to how much responsibility a 12 year old can shoulder. As a parent, I would want to give the kids advance warning. I would also not like to ask someone to come over and find an empty house.

I think I'd probably back off the spanking, but give the four of them a good talking to about why it was important for them to follow my instructions in what was an unexpected and difficult situation.
