Riding Away
A mahoover Production

Your family owns and operates a ridding stable, and your two boys, John (13) and Mark (17) help out.

You had to meet some people in town today, and you left John and Mark at home with Mark in charge.  When you get back, you find John riding his favorite horse Paint in the ring.  However, before you left this morning you had told Mark that Paint had a loose shoe and you didn't want him rode until the farrier could come by.  When you ask John why he is riding Paint he says that Mark said he could go riding after he got his chores done.  When you ask where Mark is, you find out that he did his chores and took his favorite horse on a trail ride.

Mark didn't tell John not to ride Paint, and John could have chosen a different horse.  If John had known that Paint shouldn't be ridden, he wouldn't have.

How many spankings (if any) will you be giving today?

None.

Mark is going to give me trouble that I did not tell John about the loose shoe.

None. At 13, John doesn't need constant supervision. At 17, Mark should be able to go on a trail ride by himself, especially if we OWN a riding stable. The shoe must not be very loose, or John would have noticed. If anyone is in trouble, it's me for not communicating better.

Stevie thinks that Mark needs a right good lesson and all, so yon lad is going to be thrashed very hard indeed...

I agree with everyone that there will be no spankings. But I will talk to Mark. The two things I will cover are that he didn't pass on that Paint shouldn't be rode, and that things can happen and that someone should be around when John is ridding. He doesn't need to be in the ring with him, but there should be someone around the stable just in case.

I would like to agree with kier but it says I clearly told him I didn't want him riding and I even explained why I told him and it also says he could have chosen another horse.... 13 is old enough to listen and as someone who has grown up with horses and knows that a loose shoe needs fixing he will be getting something.

As for the older brother I do agree with kier that a 13 year old doesn't need a constant babysitter

Unless I have a rule about supervision while riding, then I don't see any reason for spankings.

On the other hand, I'm going to ask Mark who he expects me to trust him with the family car, when I apparently can't trust him to pass on a simple message.
