You get a call from the convenience store a few blocks away. Your son, Kevin and his best friend, David of his were caught shoplifting slushies. Because of their age, they're not calling the police, but they want you to come pick up the boys.

Kevin and David

When you get there, Kevin explains that he was going to treat, but that he'd forgotten his wallet, and they didn't realize it until they'd already made them.

What's your next step?

After that.:

Did you ask Kevin to show you his wallet? What do you do if he doesn't have any money in it?

They're both going to get the age-appropriate mother of all spankings. Even if there was money in the wallet, and they forgot it as they say, they should have asked the manager to call me rather than attempting to shoplift (I'm assuming dine and dash). If there's no money in the wallet, and they lied in addition to stealing, even as boys the age of the ones pictured, they're in for a switching.

I guess my approach is a bit softer. I will ask to see if Kevin had money.

If not, then we will need to discuss how he could have handled it (ask the manager to call me as Kier has pointed out) but this is still theft and so a spanking will occur. I will be less severe than Kier but a message is needed. Do I have permission to spank David? if so he gets the same as Kevin, if not, then I will let his parents deal with him.

Spoiler:
If Kevin has money and was lying to me: go cut a switch!

Have to say Kevin's story seems a tad unlikely to me.

Were they out already or did they specifically go out to get the slushies?

Either way I'm surprised they had no money.

Kevin seems destined for a spanking but not at all convinced I have the justification for spanking David as I'm unclear what he did wrong. Plus I consider he should be dealt with by his parents.

I'm inclined to believe Kevin's explanation.

If the mechanics of dispensing slushies are anything like they are over here then shoplifting is an exaggerated description of their "crime" since it would be virtually impossible to do so in a clandestine manner.

The question is - were they caught unable to pay? - or were they attempting to walk out of the shop with them?

If the latter spankings are certainly in order, otherwise they get a pass.

In the circumstances I wouldn't even have thought of a wallet inspection.

Embarassed Looks like I screwed this one up! Embarassed

Kevin and David are 11.

Yes, you do have permission to spank David.

The slurpee machine is self-serve. The clerk can see it if he looks, but it's not right under his nose. In other words, he may or may not see someone getting one, but if he's busy at all - probably not.

Yes, they were attempting a version of dine and dash.

Kevin is getting a spanking. I'm not going to attempt to catch him in a lie. Who wouldn't lie in the circs? His excuse is irrelevant. I think David's parents can decide to what degree if any he is culpable and deal with him.

How severe I will be will depend upon their reaction to having been stopped. If they gave the version described the moment they were stopped and it turns out that they had forgotten to pick up the wallet before leaving home, I'll give a standard hard spanking. If they've lied beyond this, heaven help Kevin!
