It's Independence Day.  You have plans for your family today.  You kept your nephews over the weekend, and today, you're meeting your siblings and at the lake, where you'll be grilling burgers and playing around until sundown, when there's a firework display.  Your boys wanted to go out of town with some friends of theirs, who'll be shooting off fireworks.  When you nixed that, they wanted to go buy some to set off at the lake, which is forbidden.  You made that very clear to them.  They weren't happy, but they seemed to agree.

Your son, Clyde - 13, and your nephews Tommy - 12 and his cousins, David - 13, and Mike - 11.

Today, they went to hang out with some friends of theirs after doing their chores.  They were supposed to be home by noon, but they were late.  They apologized, and said they just got distracted.  The only problem is that John Macklin - the father of Clyde's best friend - called a few minutes ago to apologize.  They'd gone south of town to buy some fireworks, and he had a flat, which is why they were late.

Are you going to set off some fireworks early this year?

For the record, your nephews spend a lot of time at your house, and you have permission (and have in the past) treated them exactly like you do Clyde.

With it being a holiday and me not wanting to be the bad guy I'm going to sit my gang down and give them the chance to tell me now if they have any fireworks ... If they bought any and hand them over now I'll for go the spanking for disobeying me on that subject and remind them that they would also get an upgrade as I was not asked if they could go with thier friends family to the fire works place and they were late with no word...

If they choose to not tell me now and I find out that they do have fire works then they will be cutting switches as they are illegal and for all the other infractions Evil or Very Mad

Did they go buy fireworks? Or did they go with Clyde's father who bought fireworks. I think there's a big difference.

I'm going to clarify that issue, before pointing out that they still needed to ask before going "out of bounds", even with an adult. If they were just ride alongs, the only thing that will burn is their ears. If they have attempted to do an end run around me, and then lied about it, then I'm going to handle it just as Kal would.

I think that going with their friend's father when they had permission to visit is ok even if it is out of bounds.  What is of concern is that Clyde LIED about why he was late.  That has earned a punishment which if a spanking will be deferred until after the holiday or some extra work or missing something (but not as special as the fireworks).

Now if they just wished and drooled at the forbidden fruit that is OK.  If they are under age to purchase, I would have assumed that could not have happened.

If they got fireworks then they are going to be quite sorry.  They will get a punishment worthy of the Mikado.  They will be drowning them (as that what the all knowing web says is how the cops do it).  They will be blindfolded and stuck in the car for the show.

Of coarse the boys knew I was just making a pro-forma statement when I told them "no fireworks" at the lake; they all knew I was lying because I always say bans on fireworks on the 4th of July are ANTI-AMERICAN!!

Of coarse there will be no punishment, provided they got some good fireworks for later!

As Kier said it isn't clear who bought the fireworks. One has to presume it was Mr Macklin on the basis that the boys are too young to buy them- at least that would be the case here. But they could have got him to buy some for them.

I also don't see a major problem in them just buying them if they then handed them over to you. But they haven't so it can be assumed they have something in mind.

Don't want to spoil their holiday but perhaps they'd prefer their spanking now rather than wait until bedtime.

I think I'd have asked Mr. Macklin if the kids have any fireworks rather than tempting them to lie if they do. If they did purchase any, presumably with Mr. Macklin's cooperation, they'll be handing them over. If they only went along for the ride, I don't see the point of making a fuss. I can see Clyde stretching the truth about being late to avoid a cross examination. I'm not going to dole out punishment unless the boys fail to hand in anything they bought. If I catch them later with fireworks, they're going to feel fireworks on their backsides.

I like Kals answer, A chance to come cean or else serious trouble. I think Clyde should consider himself extremely lucky if he skates on this one and its only because its Independence day thatt his pants havent already been liberated or run down the mast

Thanks Stevie for reminding me that a few years ago Kat and I wrote a story based on such an event.

I can see I wasn't clear in the scenario, but I'd intended that the boys came in and apologized, THEN Mr. Macklin called, so you weren't tempting them to do anything, in this case.
