Patrick’s Paddle
A Kat Production

You’ve been stepdad to 14-year-old Patrick for about a year. When you married his mom, she wanted you to take over Patrick’s discipline, with the full understanding that would mean corporal punishment. When the two of you broached the subject with Patrick, he made it clear he didn’t accept the suggestion. You bowed out, and your wife decided to rely on non-physical punishments, as she felt unequal to administering cp for a variety of reasons.

Today, to your bemusement, Patrick presents you with a paddle he made as a woodshop project.

He tells you, “Look, I’ve changed my mind. I know you a lot better now than I did a year ago when we talked about this. Oh, and by the way, I’ve got in-school suspension tomorrow because I called Mr. Hayward Scrotum Head. Take it easy on me, would you?”

(Your wife doesn’t consider in-school suspension to be much of a punishment and ordinarily follows it up with some sort of restriction. Mr. Hayward teaches PE and likes military haircuts. Upon questioning, Patrick explains that Hayward told the class to run laps. Patrick responded by saying, “Okay, Scrotum Head.”)

Do you put the new paddle to use?

No. It's a very minor school misbehavior which has been dealt with at school. I'll accept the paddle with thanks, and we can talk about putting it to use in the future for something that merits it. This doesn't.

I tend to agree with AFinch but my spouse nor my step son do not.  It does seem to be a very good time for Patrick to experience the paddle not full force.

I'm delighted that we are getting closer which is a good thing.   I'm also disturbed by the hint that in school suspension are frequent for Patrick.  That has to stop.

Is the Eagle daring and showing he's got balls?

It does seem pretty minimal to merit an additional punishment, but it appears that his Mom would impose something and Patrick appears to expect something.

Thus think this is a good opportunity for a one lick demonstration of what the paddle feels like. It may be enough to dissuade him from doing anything that will merit its use again in the near future.

Though I'm inclined to agree with Ivor, I don't like changing accepted punishment methods at the behest of the offender. Hence, I believe that the three of us need to talk about and agree for the paddle's use in future but that for now, whatever his mother imposes is the rule.

Now, if she suggests paddling him...!

Unless he tells me that he said it quietly, to a friend, then this is just stupid behavior and shouldn't be encouraged. Not only is it rude, but it's never a good idea to incite those in authority above you.

I have no problem with CP for Patrick, either for this or in general, nor with using this paddle, if it seems size appropriate for him. I do think we need to sit down and talk about things, so he understands when he can expect it, and that he doesn't get to shift back and forth. We'll probably also run it by his mom, just to make sure she's still okay with the situation.

I hate ISS and I'm not happy with why he earned it, but I'm happy with his trust in me. After explaining my feelings, I'll tell him that I won't go easy on him, but that I don't see this as a major offense - just a kid lipping off when he should know better. Unless that's a recurring thing, I think just a swat or two (depending on the size of the paddle) should be plenty.

Hmm. When I was in school we made things such as egg racks in woodwork class.

Anyway, I'm going to whack that boy.

Just to show how long ago it was, I made a matchbox stand. You placed one end of a box of matches on the raised centerpiece and that opened them ready for use. Smile
