THE RED BUTTS ARE COMING?
A John Boy Production

You are a Colonial reenactor who goes to different Colonial Fairs around the country. Your significant other dresses up as do your children: George 8, Martha 6, and Arnold 4.

Some scenes from recent reenactments:

ARNOLD - 4, MARTHA - 6, GEORGE - 8

There is one problem at the moment and that is George wants to take part in the battles with you. He brings this up each time you go. Most times if you tell him no and explain it is for his safety he accepts and goes to play with the other kids. Today George comes up to you while you are prepping for the show and you once again tell him no. He runs off to play and you think that is the end of it.

During the show you take a well scripted musket butt to the head. As you lay there you hear a commotion. You peak just enough to see without breaking character and see your son attacking the soldier who "knocked you out." After the performance, you go look for you son. You find your S/o holding him in a tight grip and telling him off. You join your s/o and you are pretty upset about it as well.

What happens next?

Do you take him back to your camp and someplace private for a chat? Do you take him someplace private and give some swats? Do you take him back to camp and ground him from the rest of the fun? Something else?

Think somehow a way should be found for children to be in character too, like civilians caught up in the business, may be holed up in the church or watching their crops burn. May be George could be a drummer boy. He certainly needs some understanding of what these events are about A firm talk is what is needed

I think a talk is all that's called for. An 8 year old watching his dad take a musket butt to the head without understanding that's it's "just acting" OUGHT to provoke George's response. No spanking, and no grounding.

I'm in agreement so far and I like the idea of trying to find something that he could do...,

I'd say he got his role perfectly right. At 8 he would have been expected to contribute to his upbringing by doing chores and easy jobs. So hewould have been a "big boy" already.

I would be surprised if no boy has followed his enlisted father to the battlefield and reacted the way he did. Unfortunately that boys fate would be quite different to George's.

Since we are acting I'm staying "out" and wait how he and my oponent will do. Later we will have a talk.

I'm sure he could be found a part being bayonetted by a horrible British soldier. Evil or Very Mad

To be honest, I'm not clear on if he was actually involved in what's going on (which would be disobedience and a spanking offense), or if he was watching and got upset when he saw me 'hurt'. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt, and just have a talk with him, to be sure he understands what's happening.
