An Ivor Production

You have gone on vacation to the coast. It is the first time you've been to the coast since your now 11 year old son Duane was a toddler, so this is his first real experience.

He has much enjoyed being able to go in and out of the sea and has quickly made friends with some of the other kids there. However, on the second day you spotted him involved in a 'fight' that was actually the boys throwing sand at each other. You told him that was dangerous and pointed out what might happen if his sand contained a pebble or if just the sand went into someone's eye. He was told not to do it again and informed that if he did he was in for a spanking.

A few days later you see:

On calling him over and telling him to get over your lap for the promised spanking, he says,

"But I didn't actually throw it Pa. I was about to and then I remembered what you'd said."

Now what happens?

A vacation at the beach, and there's a question as to whether he threw it at all? I'm not spanking him. If I believe him, I praise him and let him go back and play; if not he can sit out for a while. Either way, it doesn't seem like a spankable offense to me, especially not publicly.

If he hadn't thrown anything it's too bad - for me.

Even if Duane isn't being entirely honest about whether or not he really would have thrown the sand, I intervened in time. I think it's always better to stop misbehavior before it happens than to punish it afterwards.

If I have reason to doubt his word, I'll distract him. If not, I'll tell him to go do something else and have a good time.

I'm with the consensus.

'Then what made you consider it.'

If I saw this surely I'd have seen if he actually threw it or not. Did he stop because I interrupted him. Whatever I do want to find out if my son is in a dispute with a particular child and ensure they are kept apart if there is a danger of this happening. My son can sit near us for a bit so I can be sure his temper is under control. He is on thin ice.

Back in the day I did the same thing when I had a tantrum during a ball game with other kids on the beach. I threw sand in a girls eyes and got the handspanking to end all handspankings on the spot and taken back to the Villa for the rest of the day in disgrace. I was 6 or 7 at the time No spanking this time but had the sand been thrown ...oh yes

I think I want to know more. Where were the other boys? Were they in battle position? Were they tossing sand into the sea?

I hate to ruin a vacation but if they were in battle again, then I must. Other parents should be informed.

Agreed - he looks too clean to have been throwing wet sand around. But I suspect it won't be too long before Duane does something to earn a spanking.
