THE CAMPING TRIP
A DMK Production

You and your nine year-old son, Timmy, have a weekend camping trip planned; just you and Timmy in the woods for the weekend. You and Timmy are both excited for the trip.

You arrive and unload what you can from the car and make a short hike through the woods to your camp site. You tell Timmy to stay right there as you need to make one more trip to the car. You stress to Timmy that you will be right back and you don't want him wandering off.

You go to the car and, on your return, you do not see Timmy at the camp site. You call for him and start to worry a bit but then you see Timmy heading back to the camp site:

You ask Timmy why he wandered off when you asked him to stay at the camp site. Timmy answers, "I didn't wander off, I went to collect some firewood."

Will your weekend camping trip start with a spanking?

I should of made him join me in carrying stuff, however I did tell him to stay at camp. I think some stingers and a little tongue lashing.

Of coarse not, collecting firewood is EXACTLY what Timmy should be doing, no matter what I may have told him!!

It seems like a misunderstanding of what I meant by campsite. No harm done but I'll be very specific from now on.

He looks so pleased and happy that I am not going to ruin the mood, or potentially the entire weekend, by doing anything other than expressing my thanks for his efforts.

Am I really so naive as to expect a 9 year old to stay in one spot while I go to collect more stuff from the car; if so, I need to get help.

Of course he's going to look around and, since his looking around has brought reward, in terms of wood for the fire, he'd getting praise with just the slight catch in my voice when I refer obliquely to my utterly crass earlier instruction to him.

I'm with Ivor.  My fault, for saying something vague and then expecting him to read my mind.  I'll probably just  say "oh, good" for the firewood collection, and next time I'll try saying something about "line of sight", "within earshot", etc. etc.  Look how happy he is about what he has done. It would ruin his mood and mine both for me to do anything more.

We will have a talk about just what staying on the campsite means. I would find it very hard to spank when Timmy is one so excited and two trying to be helpful which in fact he has been

He's obviously found a friend as well. There is no way he could pick or load up that lot in that way without help!

Unless this is a kid who I just picked up from Rent-a-kid for the weekend, he knows exactly what I meant by 'don't wander off.' However, at that age, I can see him wanting to help and wanting to surprise me.

If I had a specific reason for telling him not to wander (snakes, poison ivy/oak in the area) then I'll keep a very close watch on him the rest of the weekend. Later, I'll have a talk with him about doing what he's told. For now, I basically agree with Ivor. This was a spanking offense, but I just don't think I can enforce it... this time.

I also agree with ivor as do Adric and Jack as well.
