I'M NOT READY YET
A DMK Production

Your nine year-old son, Andy, is a rather well behaved boy but he does earn a spanking on occasion. Andy is always as cooperative as he can be with his spankings. Obviously he doesn't like being spanked but he doesn't fight you on things or argue with you over it. Andy usually knows he messed up and takes his punishment as best he can.

Today, Andy has earned a spanking and does agree with you that he has and so you send him to his room to get ready telling him you will be in in just a few minutes. (This is your normal procedure.) You go to Andy's room to give the spanking but Andy is not there. You check the bathroom and then the rest of the house but don't find him.You then look outside and see Andy is in his tree house.

You go out to speak to Andy and he sees you and simply says, "I'm not ready yet."

How do you respond?

I'm going to ask him when he will be ready. The scenario says he agrees he earned this--I'll give him an opportunity to explain to me why he doesn't deserve it. Otherwise, I'm telling him that putting it off will just make it worse. If it's a matter of minutes, I can wait. Otherwise, I'll point out that sooner or later he's got to come down so it might as well be sooner.

The weather seems fine so Andy can stay in his treehouse ALL NIGHT if he wants!!

I go along with this.  Sometimes a boy needs a little time in his tree to think about life.  If he intends to be ready in a reasonable time, I can wait.

(I had a tree, and I needed my time up there when things weren't going my way.  One time I had a spanking waiting for me when I came down, and after awhile Dad came out and told me he would have to cut down my tree if I didn't come down pretty soon.  I came down as fast as I could.)

I think I will set a timer under the tree, with 30 to 45 minutes on the countdown. If he comes down before the alarm – no problem. I can wait that amount of time without any major issue. If however, he is simply stalling, then we will discuss why, and he may earn some consequence for the stalling (such as chores in addition to a spanking).

Since he usually accepts his punishment, we will discuss what happened this time, and see what was causing his delay now.

No problem, I'll simply ascend to the tree house and spank him there. Twisted Evil

Andy needs/wants/must work out some things about the world and himself.

I’ll tell him to work things out and if he wants to discuss stuff I’m available and the spanking will wait.  He’ll get a call for dinner should that time come while he still working things out.

If he does not resolve stuff by bedtime, then I’ll press him to talk.  Whacking his butt will not help him develop his brain which is a top priority.

I'll tell him he's got 15 minutes to 'get ready', but that if he's any longer than that he can pick a switch on is way down........

I think I'll ask him why he's not ready and if he wants to talk about it. I will probably set a time limit (we need to get it over with before supper, buddy, but you can wait a bit longer, if you like), but I don't have a huge problem with it - as long as he's not working himself up over things.

He agrees he earned it so I will let him take his time. Like Jack I will set a limit and try and talk to him but I'm not forcing him down if he just needs a little wait time.

I agree.  All he can do up there is sit still and think about what he did wrong and what is going to happen to him when he comes down.  That's just additional punishment that he is imposing on himself.  If he wants to prolong his punishment in that way, I don't see any reason to hasten or interrupt that process.  He is old enough to know that he can't live in that tree for the rest of his life.  I'll just tell him he has to come down by dinnertime to eat dinner and face the consequences of his actions.

Great job on this BOTD Dave.  This one really spoke to me.  Here's my version of how this story could have unfolded.  Thanks for the inspiration.

Adric, I am also going to transfer this comment to a thread of its own about your story.

(Comments on the story should go to that thread.)
