FALLEN ARCHES
An Emlyn Production

The fishing village of El Gzira was a tourist destination.  Visitors would come down from Agadir to see the stunning rock arches, and they would stay to have a fish supper while watching the sun setting into the ocean - thus bringing much needed money to the village.

But! Catastrophe!  The main arch fell this summer.

Great Uncle Emlyn blames Hassan's and Khalid's ghetto blaster. He thinks the arch was brought down by loud music, like the walls of Jericho  brought down by trumpet blasts.

"I told you not to play that thing on the beach. It disturbs my afternoon nap, and now look what's happened. No more stunning views: just a pile of rubble.  No more tourists.  No money for the fishermen."

The boys claim it was nature: the force of the ocean tides.
Great Uncle replies that the tides have been coming in and out for a hundred  million years (or thereabouts):  so why did the arch collapse now?  He's sure it must have been the loud music.

Should he whack the boys?

As desastrous the collapse of the arch is for the village and how desastrous their loud music for Sir's afternoon nap, the boys are not to blame for this.

Nevertheless, since he's Sir Em, he is going to whack them.

Just because the boys are not responsible for a natural phenomenon does not mean Great Uncle can't find a reason to whack them.

Whack away!

In order for the arch collapse to be directly caused by the ghetto blaster, harmonic resonance would have to have been the direct cause of this. The reality is that this would be extremely unlikely. There are cases where harmonic resonance can cause structural collapse; it was the reason why a bridge over the Tacoma (Washington State) collapsed, it is how one can break a glass with one's voice and it is the reason than modern armies break ranks when marching across a bridge.

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge swaying/collapsing:

However, for the boom box to be the direct (i.e. proximate) cause of the arch collapse presupposes that the exact natural harmonic resonance frequency of the bridge was played by the boom box. That is highly unlikely. And, even if it were to have happened, it would have been a happenstance accident, and not a deliberate act.

It is far more likely that the boys are correct; natural erosive forces of the tides likely disturbed the underpinnings of the arch. As Sir Emlyn well knows, and Chaucer so aptly said, "Time and tide wait for no man." The boom box may have disturbed Great Uncle's nap, but did not very likely bring down that arch.

Having said all that, disturbing that nap may well constitute a smackable offense, but Sir should not cite the arch collapse as a reason for the deserved whacking.

I think Uncle Em needs to study the term erosion, and (harmonic resonance aside) very probably owes the boys an apology.

However, they've also been disobedient and have disrupted his nap, so a whacking is definitely in order. Maybe they can take turns slippering each other, while I watch and critique, until they get it right.

Seems a bit harsh to blame the boys for the erosion but if my peace has been disturbed a whacking is more than justified anyway

Very interesting about those bridges.  Amazing what we learn on Bransom.

Never mind Ella Fitgerald.  If Great Uncle Emlyn sang it would break a pewter tankard!

El Gzira is just ten kilometres (six miles) up the coast from here.  I've walked there a few times along the rocky shore. One must be certain of the tide times as there are high cliffs with no escape route.

Between the cliffs and the deep blue sea.

Here is a report about the El Gzira rock arch collapse:

Agence France-Presse

Sunday 25 September 2016 18.36 BST

One of two rock archways at Legzira beach on Morocco’s Atlantic coast has collapsed. A pile of red rubble was all that was left after the natural wonder near the city of Sidi Ifni, 93 miles (150km) south of Agadir, came down on Friday afternoon.

Often cited as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Legzira is famous for sunsets punctuated by the rock structures jutting out from the cliffs. They were formed over thousands of years by erosion.

It is not known what caused the collapse, but the movement of the sea could be a factor. A large crack appeared on the southern face of the arch in March after a chunk of it fell off, Ifnipress reported.

The loss of the arch may have an impact on Morocco’s tourism sector, which saw a fall in overseas visitors in the first half of 2016
.

I still blame those boys!

I went to a school with some nerds.

We had tee shirts that said "Physics is Fun."

What can I say; I am a scientist by heart.

Stevie: Many bridges have collapsed due to harmonic resonance, and there are engineers who actually create systems to prevent this. I am not a civil engineer, however, so I can’t give any sort of details of what those look like.

But, I also wrote:" Having said all that, disturbing that nap may well constitute a smackable offense, but Sir should not cite the arch collapse as a reason for the deserved whacking.”

And, by the way, Laguna Beach Nature Preserve (near San Diego CA) has a similar natural arch near some of their caves. The place is drop-dead gorgeous!
