SLIP, SLIDIN' AWAY
An 18Smacked Production

After an entire Spring of your two sons, Steve, 12, and his younger brother, Nick, 7, pestering- okay, begging you to take them camping, you finally relented, and took them to a State Park about 150 miles from your house for a week in the woods, living in a large tent. You are able to get a campsite that is pretty far away from any other campers, and if the boys were to act up, you have a hairbrush for Steve's bare bottom, and your hand has always been very effective on your youngest son's bare bottom.

The boys have been begging to go exploring on their own, and you let them go, so you could have some peace and quiet, too. They gave you a general area where they were headed, and you told them to come back at 5 PM; reminding them that Steve was in charge of Nick and he was to obey all of Steve's instructions. Before they left, you made sure Steve had his phone that was fully charged and you asked them both to stay out of the stream's water because it was still far too cold to get more than their ankles wet at this point in the year. Moreover, farther downstream, the water's flow could be pretty strong, and there was algae covering the rocky bed of the stream, making the footing treacherous.

At 5:10 PM, the boys showed up, soaking wet and shivering. You got them into clean and warm clothing and when they finally warmed up thanks to the roaring campfire, you asked what happened. Sure enough, Steve said they were exploring where the water was deep, seeing the fish, crayfish, frogs and toads, then they both slipped on the mud and algae and went into the water. The force of the current took them a ways downstream (they were pretty evasive on this) until they were able to recover and get to the side of the stream.

Do you call this an accident, or should their cabooses' be warmed up?

I think it's an accident. They didn't disobey, and they've been through enough of an ordeal that I'd likely not punish even if they had (natural consequences). I'm just glad they're OK.

Natural consequences are much more effective then anything l might do!

I basically think I have to go with the flow (or should I have let Ivor say that?).

I will say, "Guys, if you got in the water, after I told you not to, it'd be better to tell me now and take your punishment, than for me to find out later. Are you telling me the truth?"

If they say they are, I'll let it go. On the other hand, they've both just been reminded that Dad does know what he's talking about, so I may just take that as a win and not pursue further.

Well, let's see - first I told
David M. Katz wrote:... them both to stay out of the stream's water ...
But it appears that they did wind up in the stream's water.  Now it is just a question of whether that was an accident.
David M. Katz wrote:Steve said they were exploring where the water was deep, seeing the fish, crayfish, frogs and toads, then they both slipped on the mud and algae and went into the water.
So they were slipping on mud and algae, but they weren't in the stream's water?  That sounds like a place I would like to see for myself.

So this is their last chance to tell me the truth.  Now that the boys have warmed up we are all going to take a walk over to the place where they say they slipped on the mud and algae, so I can look for their footprints and decide for myself whether that place is in the stream or on the bank.

In the stream => Deluxe spankings for disobeying and lying about it.
On the bank   => No spankings, just a stern warning about being more careful.

I'll go along with Kier as I reckon they've learnt a lesson without me needing to impress it from the other end.

As long as it's clear that they've got a real fright from the experience, I'm not going to reinforce it.

If I told them not to get near the water, as it's dangerous, and they ended up in the water and almost drowning, I only see two possibilities: either they disobeyed or they are not ready to go exploring on their own. We'll talk to decide what it is, probably the second, judging from what they have said. We can still have fun, only not going on their own.

I think it seems like an accident they ended up in the water. If it wasnt they would be in big trouble but otherwise like the others I can er ... let it slide? I want to see the area myself so I can judge how close to the water I should allow them in future so we dont get a repetition, though after that experience they may not get that close again anyway

You know, I looked at the picture again, and re-read the scenario. It looks like such a nice day, and we have a nice, private camp site... I'm gonna spank 'em! I'm sure they deserve it for something Twisted Evil
